A weekend trip to see New Busch Stadium in St Louis and then a couple of art museums (The Dixon and the Brooks) in Memphis. The food highlight of the trip was the pork at Interstate BBQ in Memphis. FANTASTIC!... read more

We arrived in Memphis yesterday afternoon under blue skies....first time since we left New Bern. Memphis is a great city. As much as Nashville is country, memphis is Blues and Rock. There a lot of life in this town and everyone is casual, laid back and happy. The specialty here are dry rubbed ribs...excellent! We also took a horse carriage tour around town which was great. The funniest of all: we went to the Peabody hotel, the most luxurious hotel in Memphis to see a group of trained ducks walk from the fountain where they spend the day to the elevators. Apparently they are very famous. It was very amusing to see 200 people watching 5 ducks take a walk...... read more

The Mississippi Delta was shining Like a National guitar, I am following the river Down the highway Through the cradle of the civil war, I'm going to Graceland Graceland In Memphis Tennessee I'm going to Graceland! Axel was sent to Memphis, Tennessee to assist with a lateral promotions board for two weeks. In the middle, Laurie flew in on her way back from Maryland to check out Graceland and enjoy a few special treats. We began the day with an elaborate tour of Graceland: the Elvis Presley Mansion, Airplane, Car Museum, etc… It was very interesting to walk through the house that Elvis lived and partied in decades ago. Graceland was originally owned by S. E. Toof, publisher of the Memphis newspaper, the Memphis Daily Appeal. The grounds were named after Toof's daughter, Grace, who would ... read more

I flew in to Vicksburg several days ago to attend my best friend Derek's wedding. And like all good weddings, it isn't complete until you've done the obligatory bachelor's party. New Orleans was our first choice due to its close proximity to Vicksburg, a measly two hours drive away. Since the city, however, was still recovering from the Katrina disaster, we scratched it off our list and went to plan B. Thus all eyes shifted northward to the great city of Memphis, Tennessee. I've never been to Tennessee much less Memphis, but I've heard a great deal about the place. It's home to the Blues, stumping ground of famed musician B.B. King, and has great BBQ to boot. But none of this really matters, because what attracts me to these legendary southern cities are their ... read more

Walking in Memphis…… Yep, we were walking in Memphis and finding it easy to get around! The main area of interest was only a half hour walk away so that was real handy. Left Memphis a few days ago (we are in Houston at the moment) and loved it. It was such an awesome place, friendly and relaxed, great nightlife as well. Neither of us were massive Elvis fans either but the first leaflet we picked up was the Graceland one! Boring stuff first…hotel was great (and cheap), clean big room, free breakfast, greyhound trip was ok….as ok as they can be I guess! A bus journey anywhere isn’t exciting, just sweaty and uncomfortable! Anyway everyone knows that Memphis is the home of Rock n Roll so I wont bore you with the history blah blah ... read more

The journey from Chicago to Memphis was ok, the bus was not totally full and we stopped a few times so could stretch our legs. We jumped in a taxi from the station to our budget hotel, this time the budget hotel was good (not like the hole in Richmond). We just chilled out the first night as arrived late, watched some trashy TV as have not seen any TV for a while (which is a good thing!). I am so gutted, my trolley which I pull my rucksack around on is broken!!!! I will have to find another one soon else poor Thommo will have to help me carry my stuff. The next day we walked to the Sun Studio from our hotel, Memphis was hot and we were a bit sweaty by the time ... read more

From New Orleans was the long drive to Tennessee, and to Memphis. We arrived at Elvis Presley boulevard, and camped next to The Heartbreak Hotel. The Boulevard houses graceland, and many souvenir shops dedicated to the legend. We camped the night, and next morning was up early to tour Graceland. It was a musuem of the kings life, some rooms preserved as he had left them, others housing suits and awards from his illustrious career, a must for any music or Elvis fan to see. Then, around the back of the property is the family graves, including where he is buried, if he is dead that is.....!!!... read more

well we have been to nashville and i can safely say that we are no closer to understanding what the hell shawn mullins meant when he sang "it's like nashville with a tan"...no idea what he is talking about.....i can report that its a ripper little town....country music everywhere...we drove all the way from hot springs arkansas, past memphis to nashville...a long way...we have now handed the car back and it was very sad...we travelled just under 1000miles in it and it felt like the 3rd member of the group...and its less smelly than kristian. hot springs was great..its where bill clinton grew up...we went to his birth home in hope...having read the first 200 pages of his autobiography it was great see all tyhe places he described so well.. we drove from nashville and we ... read more

This trip was spontaneity at its finest. I decided Thursday afternoon to take the train down to Memphis, filled up my iPod Friday morning with every song about Memphis I owned, and was on the Amtrak Friday night headed south. I was ecstatic; not only was Memphis reportably 30 degrees warmer than Champaign (it was unbearable in Illinois), but as luck would have it that weekend was to be the weekend of the annual Beale Street Zydeco Festival. I love Zydeco! It all seemed perfect. I would take the train Friday night, arrive at 6 AM in Memphis, grab breakfast and then explore the town before I'd depart again at 10:30 that night in order to be back in Champaign for the Indiana game Sunday afternoon. I boarded the train with nothing but my journal, some ... read more
