We stopped in Memphis and stayed at the Holiday Inn. The next day we went to Graceland, the home of the King of Rock N Roll, Elvis Aaron Presley. I asked Johan if there was one thing he really wanted to do while on this trip and he said see Graceland. It was in that moment that I loved him anew. If you know me, you know I love Elvis. Seriously people... So we arrived there and went to the gift shop and went on the tour of the house. They don't take you upstairs since that's reserved for the family. We saw alot though and they have a guided audio tour. It was neat and we took pictures. They had his grave which was sad. We then went through a cars exhibit, a planes exhibit, ... read more

Early morning exit to New Orleans Airport. Once again found our bags had uneven weight causing a hasty repack to meet the individual 50 pound requirement. Jolene also received her complimentary frisk by airport security. Arrived at Memphis and were transported via the Heartbreak Hotel shuttle (with Elvis playing consistently on the shuttle radio). Drove down Elvis Presley Boulevard, turned right down Lonely Street and arrived at the hotel at about 1:00PM. Were able to leave our bags however check in time was a strict 4:00PM. Grabbed some fried peanut butter sandwiches (Elvis's favourite food) at the local Elvis diner and hung around in the hotel foyer watching Elvis movies on the small TV (the old 20cm wide screen with timber framing around) Found the staff (excluding one or two) extremely rude and uncaring (put ... read more

As we continued our escapade South through the vast United States, we thought it would be a great idea to drop by Nashville for a night out on the town. It was only a Monday night, but that doesnt matter! We're in the "City of Muic" and it doesnt matter what day of the week it is here! We had a good night and were impressed by the chilled out saloons and bars, the majority of which showcase some sort of live band playing Bluegrass music which was great to take in. Already, we are seing how diverse a continent America really is and how charming the different cities and the people can be. In saying that, we're also seeing an increasing amount of people living difficult lives and we had an interesting neighbour at our ... read more

Early again! I have to say when we first thought of stopping by Graceland, we thought it would be a cheesy tour but felt that since it was on our way, we might as well visit. This year is actually the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. Even in the Philippines, Elvis was huge and his death was widely covered by the Philippine media. Graceland was actually smaller than I thought it would be. When we got there, we realized we didn't really know much about Elvis except for some of his songs and a few of his movies. And that, he has many, many impersonators (the movie Leaving Las Vegas comes to mind), which I think, in some way, has made a caricature of who he was as a person. Here's some things we ... read more

An Entry from the Captain of this ship: Tennessee reminds me of Pennsylavania. Plenty of rolling wooded hills and relatively cheap gas. But one thing it doesn't have is Mike. Mike is the truck mechanic who figured out that it was that place whose name we do not mention and their poor work that was responsible for our breakdown on Memorial Day. When the generator started sputtering yesterday, all I could think was, "Why didn't this happen when Mike could've heard it - and fixed it?!" Luckily, we were just passing a brand new Camping World when we decided that traveling without the AC was dealbreaker. We had to wait around for a few hours (and spend a bunch of money buying other stuff), but they more or less straightened us out and we were ... read more

The Royce Adventure Father's Day in Memphis. The kids say that Dad is king today; not Elvis. We've driven the approximate 400 miles across Tennessee but it took us a day longer than planned. Some RV troubles -- a generator acting up and then a blown tire (one of eight on this thing) -- brought us to Mark's new favorite store -- Camping World outside of Knoxville and then a truck repair shop in Nashville. We were a little depressed last night, but a couple of drinks and a plan to get to Memphis and just hang out for the night instead of driving more made today pretty good. That, and staying at a campground near Bucher Hollar. The kids were great. Going to Graceland late on a Sunday was perfect with no crowds at all. ... read more

We arrived at the Smythe’s beautiful house, family friends of the LaGasse’s, in the evening and were ready to eat. After Mrs. Smythe suggested a few places around the city we could try, we headed out towards downtown Memphis. We made our way over to Beale Street, the most happening part of the city. Beale St. is shut off from all traffic, leaving people free to just walk down the street at their leisure. We were lucky enough to make it to Beale St. on a Saturday night, a party night of course, and the experience was just fantastic. For dinner, we made our way over to the Blues City Café, as the Smythe's ... read more

Graceland is an example of "poor white boy taste on a Hollywood budget", according to a guidebook writer. The home of Elvis was really fun to tour, even though neither of us grew up with his music or influence. The way he lived his life (minus unpleasantries that were too risque for the tour to mention) was interesting to see, hear and read about. There were several parts to the tour, from the inside of his mansion to the airplanes and cars that he owned. There were giant rooms full of his gold records, exactly as he had them displayed, to mini museums of the costumes he wore in his later years. Graceland has some neat and not too hoaky parts, from the straightforward audio tour to the policy of displaying any bouquets of flowers ... read more

What a fun day. Soon after I left the campground, it dawned on me that I could have a little side trip in Memphis on my way to Russellville, AR. About an hour out of Memphis I stopped at a rest stop to survey the map and get my directions to Graceland!!! I called my cousin Jeff to find out if he had been there and if it was worth spending a few hours there. He gave me a thumbs up and even called back a few minutes later to make sure I had detailed directions. I was primarily concerned about parking. Ya gotta think ahead when you have a combined length of 50 feet or so and can’t back up with a vehicle in tow. I had it down to where I got off ... read more

Blogger: Katie Location: Memphis, TN at Springhill Suites Time arrived: not sure. SO. This springhill suites is letting us down. First they don't have our reservation. "It was cancelled but we don't know how or why" uh huh. right. then they only have a room with a king size bed. Next one of the phones doesn't work and the wired internet doesn't work, but now we found the wireless. So basically we are annoyed with this hotel. OH also there was no parking left, and this guy told DJ to park in a "10 minute only parking spot" and the parking guy said it'd be ok. So we'll see. Anywho, we had a pretty interesting ride I guess since last update, there was a pack of bikers on the highway that were being jerks and ... read more
