Good evening from Rapid City, South Dakota. Well, were back in America, which is great. We were in Billings, Montana last week. We arrived around 11:30 am last monday there and it was 50 degrees and sunny. We all went crazy. We haven't had that kind of weather in a long time. By 1 in the afternoon it was in the 60's and we were all outside in lawn chairs, grilling. And then some one bought a wiffal ball set and we played the rest of the afternoon, even when it starting hailing and raining. We didn't care. It was that much of a relief to not be in 40 below weather! The next day it dropped to 35 degrees and I went ouside and was warm. It blew my mind that 35 felt warm!! I ... read more

Wednesday January 21 2009 Rapid City, South Dakota Oh what a sleep! I love these big pillow top-motel beds! I’m gonna get one of ‘em when I get home that’s for sure! Well we have one day to experience the most of this area of the US, so better get out of bed it’s 8 am. Brekky for free in the hotel sweet! A WAFFLE MAKER! Bloody hell I’m in heaven! Some big, industrial sized waffle maker is sitting in the corner just begging for my attention! 3 dinner plate sized waffles with butter and maple syrup later I’m full as a goog, ready for the day. Argh…. First stop is the obligatory tour of Mt Rushmore. A big statue carved in the mountain, I’m so excited I don’t know what to expect! He he Well ... read more

Badlands Our revised plan gave us a relaxing early morning before heading out to the Badlands. We had a challenge to face as the ladies in North Dakota a few weeks back had said they believed the North Dakota Badlands were better than the South Dakota ones. Obviously, they were somewhat biased but still, it gave us pause to see what we'd think since we had already seen at least some of the North Dakota Badlands and thought they were excellent. The roads leveled out pretty quickly after leaving Rapid City. Did you hear the whining? Jerry was like - what exactly is supposed to be out here? Finally, in the distance, one could see something, though I have to admit it wasn't very obvious. Rita tried to explain that unlike the mountains you could see ... read more

Rapid City, South Dakota We see more of Rapid City this morning as we start our day's activities headed to the Black Hills. Rolling hills of different shapes, sizes, and colors blanket the countryside. It was nice to take a very relaxing morning morning before headeing out, though now running later than we had expected to get our tour stops in. No worries. We will see what we are able to see and leave the rest for other planning. Bear Country USA What a treat this was! For the most part, the animals here live in a pretty natural habitat for their particular species. You slowly drive through each area trying to heed the warning of the greeter to stay in your car and keep windows rolled up. There were warnings posted along the way as ... read more

So we headed out of Cody around noon on Friday, September 5. The original plan was to hit Devil's Tower along the way. Unfortunately, we forgot to take into account the time change in which we lost an hour. In addition to being after Labor Day, and National Parks closing at earlier times, we arrived at Devil's Tower after it closed. We did see it from the highway, though. Cody got into a verbal altercation with a nasty female road construction worker, who was not doing her job in Gillette, WY, when he drove slowly past where she was standing with her back turned to us, twiddling her little flag. Apparently she didn't like this, and yelled at our rear bumper "Hey, hey, you can't drive past me!" As we had clearly already passed her, we ... read more

Last night I ended up staying with some missionaries from the Wolf Point formerly Mennonite church. The pastor, Bruce, offered me a place at the church or a place with these missionaries. There would be a bed with my name on it at their house, so of course I chose that one. I had a good time there as we sat and chatted for most of the evening. I thought it was a pretty cool experience because I don’t run into too many people that have been missionaries for 20+ years. This morning I went to the church service, which was awesome. There was a group of Native Americans, I believe their organization is called the Hope Tour. It is a ministry for Native American youth and young adults, because there is much alcohol and drug ... read more

After a quiet night’s sleep in the WalMart parking lot we were on the road at 7:15 am - STILL - headed north to Rapid City South Dakota. Our target there is Mount Rushmore. The rolling green hills of Wyoming were picturesque and covered with wild antelope and deer grazing just beside the highway. It changed very little as we crossed the South Dakota line just before dark. The black hills started looming closer with their black pine trees growing right out of the rocks! At 9:30 pm we finally pulled into the Outback steakhouse in Rapid City, SD. Patty had a need for some prime rib and the rest of us thought we deserved a good steak meal after our very loooooong day. Unbelievably, there was NO prime rib left at Outback and NO Dr. ... read more

South Dakota today. The prairies really are unending. Two scenic overlooks in 450 miles and the views were spectacular, one particularly awesome. Again the weather was spectacular; 77 to 80 degrees but with the windows opened and no air conditioner ruunning, we were very comfortable. The air here is really clean and, well . . . sweet. And the wind blows almost constantly. We lunched at a road side rest area comfortably in a constant light breeze. The ranches are huge and the grain silos and hay bales are everywhere. The cattle are the healthiest looking beef and dairy cattle that I can ever remember seeing. The soil is black and probably could grow concrete if there were seeds for it! At Mitchell we found the world's only Corn Palace. The building is decorated each year ... read more

Our next motel appeared in the form of a studio style with kitchen etc. for the bargain price of $41.99 our cheapest digs so far in America all with the help of a little voucher in a coupon book, our new accommodation bible! This was just on the outskirts of Denver which is the mile high city as it is officialy 1 mile above sea level (well what else did you think we meant). After settling in we headed into the city centre to see what we could do for a couple of days as our room was soooo nice and Denver has a backdrop of the snow capped rocky mountains it was surely too nice to leave too soon. We managed to park for free and headed to the tourist info along a nice pedestrianised ... read more
