If you didn't know already I've moved much of my pictures to Jeber.com http://jeber.com/Members/Oscar/ I don't have much time for writing since I'm starting to do more photography and work at home is busier than all. I still get some travel in and last week I drove to the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina and spent about a week down there staying in Nashville, TN, camping out near St. Louis, MO and a night in Omaha on the way back. Just made it back for Frontier Days in White River. I bought a new digital camera before I left for NC and have taken about 900 pictures in the last week. Hope everyone's doing good. talk to ya later.... read more

First in this trio of wonders is ‘The Badlands’, and take it from me, this place is like nothing else on earth. Many a poet has tried to encapsulate the awe of this place into words…all have failed miserably as words alone cannot describe or prepare you for the sheer weirdness of this unique natural spectacle. The experts consider The Badlands to be a pocket sized version of the Grand Canyon, although we can’t confirm that as yet…if the Grand Canyon is even half as impressive as The Badlands we are certain to experience geological perfection. Without meaning to sound like a geek, (I read all this in a book) but also not denying the fact that I am…some 35 million years ago the whole area was an ocean, many millennia later it became a marsh ... read more

As the title suggests…now for something a bit different. As we have just passed the 5,000 mile mark, I thought that I would celebrate it with a few pictures taken whilst in transit from one place to the next. You may think that this blog is a bit odd…even if you do, I am certain that you will still find that the pictures themselves hold a certain beauty. Images of such extreme emptiness have an almost mystical nature to them, or at least they do for me anyway. Those of you whom are used to the British motorway network will undoubtedly view these images with envious eyes and plan your trip over here as a matter of extreme urgency…roads like these are few and far between…they need to be enjoyed before they too become blighted by ... read more

There is not much to write about 10 hour drives that start at 2:30pm except that you can make it faster with Western speed limits. The scenery at the beginning was pretty and as we were driving on Saturday both of us could drive. That being said, we arrived in Hill City SD at 11:00pm on Saturday night. When we awoke, it was to an already very hot sunny morning at the J Bar Ranch Campground. We gave ourselves a break and just hung around the campground (most of my earlier catch up blogs that didn’t happen in the Virginian laundry room happened here). Ed took the kids to the nice swimming pool and we just hung around because we all had pretty low energy levels. It seemed too warm to go to Mt Rushmore so ... read more

I wish I could convey the heat of this place. It's like opening an oven set around 325 degrees and crawling inside. It is also very reminiscent of the Painted Desert and Death Valley. A very cool drive around loop. I am on my way to Custer State Park to stay for 6 nights. I just left Mitchell, SD this morning after camping at Lake Mitchell campground. I did get to kayak on the lake this morning. That was nice. ... read more

I love National Parks and take very opportunity I can to see them. I have to do a lot of driving for work in South Dakota and decided to swing into Badlands National Park on my way to Rapid City. I had never been to the Park and was wondering how different it might be from the North Dakota Badlands. I was surprised to find that the Badlands in the two states are very different but very special in their own ways. Whereas the North Dakota ones seem to have more reds and the greens of all the grass, the South Dakota ones have rich tans and pinks. In South Dakota, the Badlands seem much more arid than in North Dakota. They also have strong jagged edges on the tops. If travelling by car, there are ... read more

I've long since returned from my globetrotting Down Under. After five months of traipsing about Fiji, New Zealand and Australia I returned to the States broke, tired and extremely dusty. I spent close to two months recuperating on a couch at home in New Jersey. Occasionally I would stir myself out of my cable television induced stupor to visit college friends in Boston. My biggest complaint while travelling was the painfully absence of close friends, so to be surrounded by them again for a few weeks was what I had been aching for over several months. It's a cliche for a reason: there is no place like home. Of course, after a few weeks of couch surfing New England, my adventure-bug fired up once again. Luckily walking through Harvard Square in Cambridge, I had spontaneously ... read more

We kissed goodbye to Minnesota with 70+ degree weather and clear blue skies. Heading due west, our destination 400 miles away. South Dakota is definitely not known for its mountains, hence I finished a 300 page book in the car while Josh sang along to his Johnny Cash CD(played over 3 or 4 times - we are TOTALLY out of music we haven't heard 10 times already). We also got over 400 miles to the tank!! Just passed the SD state line we saw our first billboard for Wall Drug (thanks Matt G. for the heads up, although not sure we would have ever missed it). This first billboard proclaimed that Wall Drug was waiting for us 356 miles ahead. Who puts billboards every mile for 350 miles?? Wall Drug!! After driving until dark we reached ... read more

Hi Everyone, We finally found an internet connection in Custer, South Dakota and figured that I would update everyone on our travels so far. We made really good time and made it all the way to Central Ohio for our first night. The drive through New York was long and uneventful. It was fun to listen to music, giggle, and dance. We had a minor spat (just kidding- well if I call for bail money don’t be surprised) with a visitor service representative in New York, apparently I shouldn’t have worn my Red Sox sweatshirt!! The rivalry is alive and kicking, even in upstate New York. We made it all the way to central Ohio, to a little town called Mentor. When we got to Ohio we decided to set up camp for the night, but ... read more

We packed up camp this morning and headed off for a mud bath in a river on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The drivers told us the mud in the river was the same as the mud you get at a top spa. We were still two days away from our next shower, so I decided not to get in. But that didn't stop me from laughing at the others when they were covered in mud from head to toe. In the afternoon we went to the South Dakota Badlands. The landscape was straight out of a John Wayne movie. It was really hard to believe. We first stopped off at an old Western town that used to be thriving when the railroad used to go through. Then in the afternoon we drove through a bunch ... read more
