Me & Abe 1
Here I am sitting with Abe at the visitors center. He was trying to give me some wisdom before I started the tour........ Brain overload! That's how I feel after a day touring the Battlefields at Gettysburg. We got up early to take Karlie to daycare and then headed to the battlefields. They had a lot to offer in the way of tours and we chose to go on the bus tour of the battlefields and then take the shuttle over to President Eisenhower & Mamie's home afterward. The battlefield tour lasted 2 1/2 hours and the guide was a walking textbook. It was amazing to listen to him tell about the battles and points of interest. It was as if you were actually in battle. Now as most of you know I am not a history buff, but it is hard not to get wrapped up in all the history and emotion of what happened there. Needlesss to say I was like a sponge and was listening to every word he had to say. I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much when I was a kid as I do now though. What these men went through was tough and it is amazing that so much of the battlefields remain in tact. They have really done a good job at preserving them. The
Don & Sign
Here is Don at the sign just to prove we were there. town of Gettysburg is really quaint and just what you would expect from a small town. The buildings are all very close side by side two to three story. The bottom is usually a business and the top is where someone lives. The streets are very narrow. I would never want to drive an RV or, big vehicle for that matter, down the street. The bus went down the street however with no problem but it sure did seem like she was going to drive on the sidewalk at any moment. I did my best on the pictures but most of them I had to take out the bus window so it is what it is.
President Eisenhower's ranch was quite interesting. It is 160 acres and he purchased it in 1950 for $44,000. Is that amazing or what? It had a house and barns already on it but he pretty much gutted the house and remodeled it to his and Mamie's liking. The reason they bought it was because Mamie fell in love with the BIG kitchen which was not big at all. Funny thing was, she couldn't cook, HA! President Eisenhower loved his Black Angus cows which
Eternal Falme Gettysb
This is the eternal flame for all the soldiers lost in the battlefields. This is where they got the idea for the eternal flame at the Kennedy graves. he raised on the farm and everyone who came there got a tour of the cows first if he caught you before you got to the front door. It wasn't a big place just very homey and relaxing. I can see why they liked it after living in the hustle and bustle of Washington D.C.
We got home around 8pm and boy were we pooped physically and mentally. Karlie was tired too from her play day. We all slept good that night and then we were on the road again in the morning heading to Washington D.C.! I'm a little nervous! Will be blogging about that soon! 😊K
