This trail is about an hour northeast of Pittsburgh and follows the scenic wooded valley of the Little Buffalo Creek to Buffalo Creekland and the Allegheny River at Freeport.
This is an excellent trail and well used by the locals. Don't let the fact that it is not paved put you off. The crushed compacted limestone powder is like hard clay and basically as good as pavement. Actually, there is a section of about 3 km near Freeport that is paved and it is pitted and NOT as good
as the limestone trail.
The trail is well equipped with picnic tables, benches and at least 3 porta potties.
The trail is mostly shaded and there are only a few road crossings.
About 5 miles from Butler the trail passes in front of the Derailleur Bike and Coffee Shop. There is also a trailhead, picnic area and porta-potty across the street.
If you are starting from Butler be warned that the ride back will be GRADUALLY uphill from Freeport.
