Looked like a pretty scenic and relaxing drive to Crater Lake, so we're gonna start with breakfast at Steamboat Inn. Took in a couple more hikes to waterfalls. Ruth saw something about a unique rock formation so we drove to find that. I have often commented I wish I would develop a relationship with a geologist, as I find the earth's formation fascinating and would love to travel with someone knowledgeable. In this case it looked like vertical columns of "crystallized" stone. We are seeing quite a variety of volcanic and plate tectonics in the various regions. It is particularly interesting to see evidence of rock layering on mountain tops that indicate at one time being at the bottom of a body of water. After posting one of the photos from our journey on Facebook, I ... read more

Initially, I was just looking for a place to stay to break up the trip from the coast over to Crater Lake. Eugene had no vacancies because of graduation at the university. I ended up contacting a guy who had three riverfront cottages exactly halfway. Randy was a little over-the-top in his description of the cottages and the available hiking to multiple waterfalls http://www.rivervista-vacationhomes.com/, but I'm ahead of myself... Ruth is in her zone with a map in her lap and the latest pamphlet in her hand indicating where we want to stop next. She tracked down a brochure with good birding spots in Oregon, so it served for our way-finding. After taking in a few hikes to view some waterfalls, we stopped at a place also known to have a herd of elk. Sure enough, ... read more

Taking our time, we worked our way south along the coast. A hike at a rare coastal prairie was absolutely delightful, and a hint of the variety of wildflowers we will see on this trip. We stopped at Cape Perpetua National Forest Scenic Area, which proved to be one of our favorite stops on the entire trip. The lava rock coast with all the "blow holes" was amazing. Small pools in the rock were filled with frog tadpoles. The hike was delightful. We were again reminded of all the results of the CCC during the depression...makes you pause. Further down the coast we stopped at the Sea Lion Caves. This has all the trappings of a tourist trap, but we ended up really enjoying the stop. The cave was discovered in 1880 by a sea captain, ... read more

Flew into Portland, and immediately drove over to the coast for our stay at Cape Lookout B&B. http://www.capelookoutbnb.com/ Katie & Jim have made their home a great B&B...quiet setting, super breakfasts and great suggestions for taking in the sites. Jim also gave a good suggestions for our day of scoping out the coast up to Astoria and back. Not sure why, maybe confusion, but there were more than one Haystack rock formations along the coast. Regardless the beaches were beautiful, not what I was expecting after our trips to Pacific coast travels in CA. We went up to Astoria. We enjoyed the Maritime Museum url=http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2013/03/shark_movie_highlights_new_exh.htmlhttp://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2013/03/shark_movie_highlights_new_exh.html , always enjoy learnin... read more

Bill and I have had two adventure filled days. We are still on the Oregon coast but planning to be in California by Friday. Yesterday, we began our day by driving to Newport, a small town on the coast. We went to Yaquina Head to see the sea lions, the many bird species and the biggest lighthouse on the coast. This morning we were up early to take a walk on the beach. Bill was determined to swim in the Pacific Ocean and so he put on his bathing suit. He walked out, up to his knees, and then, due to one large wave was soaked up to his waist! At that point, he turned around and scurried back to shore. So much for a dip in the ocean. The sea lions are abundant in the ... read more

Here are some pictures of our adventures the past few days. Also, I forgot to mention that the area we are staying in, although beautiful and the people are friendly, is not exactly the ideal place to stay because as you enter the town you are faced with many signs stating: YOU ARE ENTERING TSUNAMI TERRITORY perhaps, the property here is cheap!... read more

I have lots to tell you about. We drove from Vancouver to Seattle to visit the Space Needle. It was interesting but the view from the Willis Tower was better and higher. From the Space needle we drove to Arlington Washington to spend the night and left early the next morning for our trek up to Mount St. Helen’s. (part of the Cascade mountains) Now this is worth a visit! The park is free except for the observatory at the very top; however, you do not need to go there is the mountain is quite visible from many of the turnouts even on a cloudy day, which we had. There was a free lecture giving the details of the eruption in 1980. If you were born in the 50’s or early 60’s you most likely will ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Bend May 6th 2014

Today’s destination is Bend, Oregon which is about seven hour drive away according to my mapping software from Apple. It is a pretty direct route, but 10 miles out of Spokane my GPS decided to send me off on a side road parallel to the freeway for about 10 miles, only to join it again. The only thing I can think of was that there was a traffic jam or accident ahead. In the States that feature is functional on the GPS. I decided to ignore it and it turned out there was nothing causing a delay. Just another computer hiccup I guess. From then on it worked great and without it I would have been lost getting through Pasco. That city is a challenge for someone who doesn’t know the place as Les and I ... read more

I didn't want to spend my last morning in Hong Kong sitting around the hotel room, so I packed my bags and then went out for a walk. I strolled along past little shops selling everything you can thing of: a tiny hardware store, a large number of shops selling dried seafood products (anchovies (I think), slices of fish, seaweed, and several items I couldn't identify), a money exchange office, a 7-11, a Starbucks, a shop that appeared to be selling 4x8 pieces of plywood, and others. After a while I hopped on a tram that runs along one of the main streets and rode it to the Bank of China building. I had my passport with me, so I was able to go up to the observation floor. Clearly the view was more impressive back ... read more

Our chauffer, Pete, and the tour guide, Betty, delivered us to Medford with a few new stops for us. We travel the road to Medford often but have never made the stops that Betty had planned. We took a tour through the Taylors Sausage store and have decided that will be our favorite stop along Hiway 199. What a great place to get a delicious sandwich along with a favorite beverage. After a lunch stop in Grants Pass we arrived safely at our motel for the night. Thanks to Pete and Betty for a fun trip to Medford. After checking in to The Quality Inn we started out walking. After all the lunches and dinners of the last week we needed some exercise. What a great surprise to find a festival in downtown Medford--The Annual Pear ... read more
