No job. No plans. Just six weeks in New Zealand, Australia and Fiji. October 27th - December 9th. This isn't meant to make you jealous or sad or angry that you are sitting in front of a computer reading this while we are living the Lord of the Rings. Mark and I traded in many months of free time to work hard toward one goal—to travel. It's a choice. That's why I drive a 16-year-old truck with a failing head gasket, so I can afford to see another part of the world. We travel to understand and experience culture. To feel small, scared, excited, humbled, but mostly, free. For that brief moment in time, we shed all responsibility—jobs, furniture, mortgages, commute times, deadlines, cars—and we get lost. Nobody knows where we are. And sometimes, neither do ... read more

Every October, when the third weekend of the month rolls around, Hood River County celebrates its harvest bounty of apples and pears. Each year as the Hood River Valley Harvest Festival has grown larger, smaller events have also sprung up to entice visitors to journey off the beaten path and explore the surrounding orchards at the base of Mt. Hood. The harvest festival is the perfect catalyst for setting out on a day-long driving trip. Exit 64 along I-84 east will deposit you at the festival grounds. After enjoying the handmade crafts and purchasing a bag or two of local fruit, you can follow what is known as the Hood River Fruit Loop. This jaunt will take you through the rural communities of Odell, Parkdale, and Pine Grove. While your objective may be to handpick some ... read more

In late September 2005, NW Exposures took a photo safari from the southern Washington coast, down the Oregon coast to Cape Sebastian. We were on the hunt for beaches, sea stacks and lighthouses. We were not disappointed. See the best of the photos from the trip at NW Exposures. Our lightweight Quicksilver fold-out tent camper was hitched to the four cylinder Subaru Forester, and we were off in the direction of the furthermost southwestern tip of Washington State. We crossed over the Columbia River from Washington to Oregon at Longview. Oregon Hwy 30 west was a rollercoaster ride to Astoria where we took the bridge back to Washington to visit camp near two better known lighthouses of the Evergreen State; Cape Disappointment Light and North Head Light. Next, it was back across the span to Oregon ... read more

Just under 3 weeks to our trip. Time is flying and soon we'll be packing up the bags. Not sure what will be in those bags yet, probably will figure out the night before. The house is almost squared away for those looking after it. We'll see how cold it really gets in the house. Should really put those storm windows up... Another countdown entry soon. Mark... read more

Sean: The next part of the story isn’t nearly as fraught with danger and excitement as the previous one. After leaving New Orleans, we boogied fairly quickly across this great nation, eager to get back to the Northwest as soon as possible to spend time with family (and not to mention that we had just driven across the country less than an month before). Hurricane Rita (about to make landfall in the Lone Star State) convinced us to alter our route and not travel across Texas. We definitely didn’t want to keep arriving late at night to “No Vacancy” signs. So this time we went straight north out of New Orleans and spent our first night in Memphis. Then it was up early to make the loooong leg to Sioux City, South Dakota. We stopped briefly ... read more

My affection for Polish food began in Salt Lake City, when a co-worker would prepare traditional dishes each year as Easter neared for our entire office. When I discovered that Portland holds a Polish Festival each September, I had to go in order to satiate my cravings. Early Polish immigrants to Oregon settled in the Overlook District of North Portland. By 1892 they had formed their own Polish National Alliance chapter, and in 1907 built the St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church. In 1911, the Polish Library Hall was erected just south of the church. For the past 12 years North Failing Street, which runs between the two buildings, has been cordoned off and the festival is held on these historic grounds. To ease the congestion of long lines, the festival employs the use of tokens for ... read more

My curiosity was piqued by a small clip in a local newspaper last week. It stated that Forest Grove would be holding its 15th Annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival, and anyone was welcome to come and participate. Since I had only passed through Forest Grove several years ago, I decided this was a perfect Saturday afternoon activity that would introduce me to the town. The ambitious arrived at 9am, although it appeared that a number of participants had just started not too long before I arrived around one o’clock. For only $10, you were assigned a 3 x 3 sidewalk block and given a tray of colorful chalk. The rest of the creation was up to the individual. Some came prepared with sketches or books to guide their illustrations. Others seemed to employ a freestyle approach to ... read more

South Park Blocks Since I gave so much love to the Farmer’s Market in Salt Lake City last month, I decided I should visit one a little closer to home. I have been hearing good things about the market held on the South Park Blocks in Portland, so my early morning foray began there. A sign of a good market is the bustling activity. And the advantage of a community market is the opportunity to hand select the best of the local bounty and chat up the providers of such delicious fare. It is evident by the rapport between the vendors and the customers that this market is a weekly staple for many of the attendees. On this particular Saturday, the market is also hosting the annual Tomato Festival. Long tables with bite-sized portions of succulent ... read more

Hey everyone. How long has it been? Quite awhile and we have done so much, so this will probably be a lengthy blog. So here it goes: After we left Bellingham we found our way to Mt. Rainier. What a beautiful place. We stayed on the Sunrise side and stayed for 3 days. The first day we hiked 9 miles and did some ridge running. That was fun. It was very hard hiking, but fun. The next day we hiked to the summit of Dege Peak which was only 4.2 miles and an easy hike. We then left the Sunrise side and headed to Ellensburg, WA. The Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute is located there with Washoe and her friends so I had to go. It was absolutely amazing! We sat through a lecture and then ... read more
