In late September 2005, NW Exposures took a photo safari from the southern Washington coast, down the Oregon coast to Cape Sebastian. We were on the hunt for beaches, sea stacks and lighthouses. We were not disappointed.

See the best of the photos from the trip at NW Exposures.

Our lightweight Quicksilver fold-out tent camper was hitched to the four cylinder Subaru Forester, and we were off in the direction of the furthermost southwestern tip of Washington State. We crossed over the Columbia River from Washington to Oregon at Longview.

Oregon Hwy 30 west was a rollercoaster ride to Astoria where we took the bridge back to Washington to visit camp near two better known lighthouses of the Evergreen State; Cape Disappointment Light and North Head Light.

Next, it was back across the span to Oregon with stops at Del Rey Beach near Seaside, and Cannon Beach. We camped at Nehalem Bay State Park.

The view through Cape Meares Lighthouse is awesome. The Fresnel lens works wonders with light, especially at sunset. We camped at Cape Lookout State Park.

We sprinted south with views at Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, and lunched in Lincoln City. Ocean

views again became available near Boilder Bay with stops at Rocky Creek, Otter Crest and the Devil’s Punchbowl. I caught a magnificent standing wave near the Punchbowl basking in rays of a late afternoon sun.

We camped at a favorite state park, Beverly Beach, a short drive to Yaquina Head Lighthouse.

The next morning we visited diminutive Yaquina Bay Lighthouse south of Newport. Southward ho; past Seal rock, Beachside, through Yachats with a picnic lunch at Cape Perpetua. Our destination was Carl G Washburn State Park, just north of my favorite Haceta Head Lighthouse. Standing alone that evening on an overlook, the Heceta Head light was magnificent as the air began to transform to a very light sigh of fog.

The next night we were at the Umpqua Lighthouse and nearby State Park. The following night found us at Sunset Bay State Park near Cape Arago Lighthouse.

The trail boss requires us to stay at a motel after a period of time on the road. We found a beach view accommodation at Bandon, just south of the Coquille River Lighthouse.

The rocks and stacks at Bandon beach are glorious. And you should see the photographers

fighting for position at the beach before sunrise. Yelling at each other, calling names, casting aspersions; surely I was not part of that. I did have a couple of guys suggest I was taking a bit long adjusting my tripod. “Shoot and scoot,” they admonished.

Continuing southward, we visited Cape Blanco Lighthouse and drove to Gold Beach where we located a commercial campground with full utilities. The next day, we visited the Cape Sebastian Scenic Corridor.

What a great photo safari. I am very pleased with the results and our visit. What a fun time camping along the Oregon coast.
