Newport mural - depicting the Coastguard
17th June, 2009. Newport Beach, Oregon.

Forgot to mention yesterday, that as you go down the Oregon Coast you see the Giant Redwood forests, yesterday we saw a few samples, they are big, will get some photos later on.
Walking shoes on this morning, off for a walk, didn't get far, Craig found a great fishing tackle shop, bought Sam a surf casting rod and reel, so now she has to catch a fish, and a few bits and pieces for oneself, was tempted to go back again this arvo.
Back to camp to unload and off for a walk through the fishing village again, heard Sammy the seal before we saw it, a great big Sea Lion, swimming along, past all those lovely smelly processing plants again, over the hill and up to the old lighthouse, had a look through, down to the beach and a long walk. The beaches aren't like ours, they have small rises and dips so you are forever going up and down.
Up into town for lunch and we had to try "Pig & Pancakes", with a name like that it was pancakes for lunch, Sams were Strawberry, mine apple, nice.
Walked home and

Looking down at Sam in the lighthouse
then it was time for catch up - shopping, oil & grease for the truck, washing, more minutes on the phone etc.
Took the truck to a place "Tin Can Henry's" for its service, they give you a paper and you sit in your vehicle watching them with a TV screen beside you as they service your vehicle for a total cost of $39.95US, not bad, as its a full service.
Newport has a Coastguard Base - equipped with a ship nearly the size of an NZ Frigate + at least one other ship, they also have a rescue helicopter up the coast a bit.
We are off to Gold Beach tomorrow, have booked an 80 mile (return) Jet Boat ride up the Rogue River for friday and also have seats at a big Rodeo in Reno on the 27th June.
