18th June, 2009. Travel to Gold Beach, Oregon.
Across the Yaquima Bay in Newport and on the way this morning, down the coast, a very scenic route, glad we came down this way. First stop (apart from photo opportunities is Seal Rock where you can view the Sea Lions in the worlds largest Sea Cave (everything you do in USA is either the largest, biggest, longest, or smallest in the world - they even have the worlds best chowder in 3 million and five different restaurants). You go down 200 ft in a lift from the top of a cliff into a very large sea cave where you can view the Sea Lions, males can grow up to 1000lb, females a sprightly 250lb. Apart from that wonderful sea lion smell it is great. Then up top to view more on the rocks below.
Down past Dunes city where they have the Oregon Dunes, huge sand dunes that you can ride on or just fall down, past Bandon, Port Oxford and to Gold Beach where we are camped. Staying in Lex's Landing RV Park, a new park but nice place and right on the Rogue River and next door to the
"Mail Boat" take off point.
Went for a walk down to the beach, again they have the USA Coastguard here, a nice little coastal boat moored in the river. Nice beach and more seals frolicking in the river. The Rogue River has three runs of Salmon each year, one now, the King Salmon in June, and another in August. Plenty of fishermen around here and they catch fish off the wharf in front of us.
Nice day today, bed early as we have to be up early for our trip up the river.
