We woke up around 7:30, fairly rested, and headed out for our day of beach and rock sightseeing. As usual, we stopped at the first coffee place we found, Cafe Rock, a drive-thru espresso shack. I ordered a cappuccino and Manoli a coffee, and unfortunately I forgot that cappuccinos made by hand aren't sweet. I sipped my super strong cappuccino for a while until we found a gas station. Just outside Port Orford we pulled over for some photos, then continued on to Meyers beach. It looked really cool, but was pretty foggy like yesterday, so we continued on, planning on returning later, hopefully when the fog lifted. Our next stop, Arch Rock, was even worse, so we continued stopping at other viewpoints, then turned back to have lunch at Gold Beach. On our way back, ... read more

Weather-wise, I had been spoiled on this trip. After so many clear, cloudless nights, I was in the habit of leaving my rain fly crumpled up next to my tent. Some nights, it didn't even make it out of the trunk. I liked being able to see the stars while laying in my sleeping bag. I woke up about 6:30 with my wool blanket pulled up over my head, the usual for most mornings. Right away, something felt off. Normally I would lie there until my brain fully kicked into gear, but on this morning, something told me I needed to get up. I pulled the blanket back, and a couple of small drops hit my face. It was raining! I was up and out of the tent in a flash. Without the rain fly in ... read more

The next few weeks was spent cycling every day with Matt, something usually going wrong with his bike that slowed him right down. He had lost his bank card he told me so his funds were becoming limited, this changed my perspective of traveling with him. I've been around too many broke people in my life to feel 'ok' with this. Matt was cool and everything and I still believed his stories though some of them began sounding very exaggerated, I even caught him out at one point re telling an important story about him getting hit by a drunken driver in Alabama that was completely different the second time through. We started going to all these Indian casinos that gave you free playing money if you sign up, at one I won $170 which was ... read more

Out late last night watching the fireworks and decided to take it easy today. After a late start (noon) we headed down the coast to Gold Beach. Our road wound along the coastline with high mountains on one side and cliffs dropping down to the crashing surf on the other. We passed many lovely beaches and turn-out viewing spots. We stopped at the Tu Tu Ton Lodge on the Rouge River. This lodge is listed as one of the "1,000 Places To See Before You Die." Very posh and $$$. We went down to the river dock and watched the boats go by. Very relaxing, peaceful, and picturesque. We saw a deer meandering around on the golf course; it seemed to be his home. We continued on and arrived at our destination; Gold Beach. After checking ... read more

We think the Redwood National Park, as beautiful as it is, is probably one of the least visited national parks. We hiked the Lady Bird Johnson trail loop which took about 45 minutes. We felt like ants among giants in the forest. The fragrance of the redwoods was wonderful. Northern California is a striking difference to the deserts of Southern California. We continued on U.S. 101 to the Oregon coast. the coastline was protruding with jagged rocks, and the winds were very strong causing rolling, foaming surfs. We saw about a third of the Oregon coast, then headed inland across the seemingly endless mountains. We stayed the night at Roseburg, OR.... read more

Today we drove from California into Oregon. We decided to take the scenic route on Highway 101. It was so nice to see the ocean. It was definitely the best view we had on our trip so far. We didn't stop to do anything, besides eat lunch, because we wanted to make it to our hotel in time so we could see sunset on the beach. We made it in time, and had plenty of time to walk along the beach and view the ocean. ... read more

The trip has come to a close and my feet are back to solid ground in Salt Lake City. When I initially left D.C. I never could have dreamed of what this trip would entail. I am a better person for it. My life will forever be changed by those who I came into contact with. I love you all and hold a deep respect for all our memories we shared. Much love to you all. Thanks again. 18th June, 2009. Travel to Gold Beach, Oregon. Across the Yaquima Bay in Newport and on the way this morning, down the coast, a very scenic route, glad we came down this way. First stop (apart from photo opportunities is Seal Rock where you can view the Sea Lions in the worlds largest Sea Cave (everything you do in USA is either the largest, biggest, longest, or smallest in the world - they even have the worlds best chowder in 3 million and five different restaurants). You go down 200 ft in a lift from the top of a cliff into a very large sea cave where you can view the Sea Lions, males can grow up to 1000lb, females a sprightly 250lb. Apart from that wonderful sea lion smell it is great. Then up top ... read more
