I thought this Portland hostel was going to be boring: the walls were white and the people seemed nonexistant. But that all changed. I've met a bunch of poeple from the US here, which is sort of unusual. Two chefs from New Orleans, two college girls from the SanFrancisco Bay area, a man from Chicago, a kid who lived in the Carolinas, and my room mate last night was a cool mohawked-chic from NY. We talked about how the "New York Pizza" here straight up LIED, and how we both had missed our favorite, colorful New England season: autumn. Last night I met a vegan from Minneapolis, Jesse, he fed me yummy pasta without any animal products, and talked about how he used to be a cook. Everyone I meet here seems to at one time ... read more

Trick-or-treating stopped for me Junior year of high school. I gave out candy Senior year, and last year I went to a costume party. Little did I know it would be back to haunt me. Ya-hahahahahahaa!!!! Rainy, rainy, wet, sloppy, dirty, am I describing this city or myself right about now?? I said farewell to Tacoma today, rode the train down to this new place, this clean and quite hostel. A day full of hugs and phone calls. I was talking to the lady behind the snack counter, yes, the s n a c k counter, on the train. Fully equiped with pizza and soup, coffee and beer. I was telling her about the only trains I've ever been on: the ones headed toward Grand Central Station, and how they're nowhere near as fancy. "Oh-you mean ... read more

I was impressed with Portland, the traffic was surprisingly good, there were plenty of old beautiful historic buildings, one way streets everywhere and biking lanes. We checked out the international rose garden which boast many different variety of roses. I never knew there were that many! We also took a tour in the Japanese gardens which contained bonsai trees, sand gardens and very expensive fish. Basically Portland has lots of old buildings and gardens and the atmosphere is fairly relaxed. It’s also tax free as is Oregon State. I was tempted to buy a camera but in the end they didn’t have what I wanted in stock. The hostel we stayed at was pretty good also. People were friendly. We extended our stay for another night. Shopping at a organic supermarket called trader Joe’s was awesome. ... read more

Autumn in the Pacific Northwest has been ushered in with spectacular weather: blue skies, high temperatures, and the glow of amber and crimson leaves. This weekend is the Autumn Moon Festival in the Chinatown/Old Town section of Portland. It’s a celebration of tradition and history, as well as shaping a path for continued appreciation of culture and diversity. For the past several years, the city has been busy with a development project in Old Town. They’ve installed more of the uniform red lampposts throughout the district, as well as updated signage, poured new curbs and sidewalks, installed public art and historical markers, and planted over 100 new trees. The festival was a way to reintroduce the public to this revitalized area. Two different stages for musical entertainment anchored the festival streets along Third and Fourth Avenues. ... read more

We picked up our friend Eva from the Portland airport today. She will be visiting with us for a week. It's really nice to see our friends again! We went to the Japanese garden, which they claim is one of the most authentic outside of Japan. It was a vey peaceful place to be and the detail put in the plants, walkways and art was amazing. They will be having a moon ritual tonight so they raked a little gravel garden in a special way, it took a specialist 2 days to do it. After that, we went to the nearby rose garden which was very very impressive. There were several hundreds of different kinds of roses arranged in endless fragrant patterns. The vibrant perfume and colors kept us there quite a while! Afterwards we decided ... read more

I woke up pretty early and spent an hour thinking about how I’d go about getting by the next few days. I already rang Aussie Credit Cards and the first thing they would do was to send it to my home address. I thought about going home again, but I drifted back to sleep… When I woke up again, Bob and Diane were also awake. I thanked them heaps for being positive to me and putting together their reassuring words. In the short term, things were fine as Bob just decided to lend me $1000 US. Just like that. He called it ‘Emergency Money”; I didn’t really feel comfy taking it since I’m heaps embarrassed already at my knobbishness, but the last thing anyone wants is for me to be holed down. The show will ... read more

Today, Stephanie, Kaz and I are going to check out Mt Hood and the district around there to the east by the Columbia River. First I had to post some things home, like my assignments that I wrote up on the plane over to SFO. Soon after, we loaded up Lottie’s massive iPod full of awesome road trip tunes and headed east to check out some waterfalls. I remembered what Bob said yesterday about Portland having the highest concentration of sex shops in the USA and driving through some other parts of Portland, it wasn’t hard to spot them - Mr Peep’s, iCandy, Soobies…and we hadn’t even been 20 miles out of Portland yet! We jumped on the freeway to head east, followed by the Columbia Highway. Trucks steam east as they carry their cargo ... read more

I had been pretty calm about it to this point in time but always in the back of my mind I had thought that I lost it. We drove back along the Highway, Steph constantly reassuring me that I had my CC. Her mom had turned the room inside out and when I got there, I did too. Still no sign of it. That night, we had Mexican for dinner. It wasn’t too bad. I told the Schaefers that Sydney doesn’t have too many good Mexican restaurants and that if you don’t count the Taco Bell restaurants, there weren’t many Mexican restaurants at all. Later on, I also rang home and told my little sister what had happened, and my big sister too. The message to them both was the same - “Don’t tell mum”. ... read more

I got up before Steph because I slept like a baby and Emma (Steph’s cat) climbed up on my bed to greet me good morning. This has been Emma’s room before my arrival and Justin (Steph’s brother) had this room before he moved out and got married. It’s a very nice room, which is at basement level with a window near the ceiling that Emma peers out of to make faces to the neighbouring cat. Before too long, Steph is up and we’re about to go to the zoo today. Well, Steph is dropping me off because her school is ghey, making her go to her class on her birthday - how could they! At least they cancel one of her late night classes so that we could all go to dinner tonight. After a ... read more
