From the City to the Scenic Route Monday morning we woke up and headed for the Lan Su Chinese Garden in downtown Portland. It's considered one of the most authentic Chinese Gardens outside of China. Most of the materials that the 65 artisans from Portland's sister city, Suzhou, used to assemble the gardens came from China. The gardens are beautiful to simply wander through, but there is also a tea house serving authentic teas in the same methods used for hundreds of years. The gardens often offer programs on calligraphy, music, tai chi, and mahjong. While we were there we had an opportunity to drink tea and listen to live music, but we had a lot to get in that day, so we didn't stay long. After the gardens we headed back though downtown towards lunch. ... read more

Good Morning, Portland! We woke up yesterday and were soon on the road. We wanted to hit a couple more wineries before heading to Portland. First stop was the Carlton Wine Studio. It's kind of a winery co-op of sorts. There are 8 winemakers working under one roof sharing pressers, bottling equipment, and barrel storage. It gives you an opportunity to taste a few different wineries in just one stop, but we weren't overly impressed with the tasting there. Next stop was Domaine Drouhin. Drouhin is a famous French wine maker who was impressed by the quality of grapes coming out of Oregon and sent his daughter, Veronique, to open a winery. It combines proven French techniques with the unique benefits of the Oregon soil, which produces some of the best Pinot grapes around. Drouhin winery ... read more

Planning a trip to visit Portland? Here are some iPhone apps you might want to consider Portland Essentials: At $2.99 it is cheaper than a guidebook and more likely to be up to date. It has a catalog of mainstream and quirky Portland landmarks, eateries, nature sites, mass transit, etc. A huge bonus is that it has GPS locations for all of these so can show you on your iPhone GPS the sites of interest close to wherever you are. I'm impressed by the extent of information it contains. The interface is easy and beautiful. Cocktail Compass - Portland: It's free. It uses the database from a local newszine to help identify the happy hour closest to your GPS location. And since dropping in on a happy hour is often a cheap way to eat in ... read more

And their tater tots are the best in the city. Vincente's Pizza (1935 SE Hawthorne) - Some slices but known for their excellent pies. The Trail Blazers er Portlands professionelle basketball team. The Blazers spillede imod Milwaukie Bucks. Før kampen overhovedet startede foregik der allerede en hel masse ting. Cheerleadere og dansede opviste. En kæmpe oppustelig bil fløj rundt inde i arenaen, og ... read more

February 18, 2010 Adam and I tied the knot in Vail, Colorado two weeks ago (2.6.2010). We feel so blessed to have had 86 friends and family trek out to Vail in the snow to be there for our wedding weekend. We love everybody so much and are so thankful to have the people that we do in our lives. Unfortunately, our wedding did not necessarily offer up the best atmosphere for spending QUALITY time with our peeps. So in the spirit of pursuing this quality time, it is only fitting that we traverse the USofA on a motorcycle, to love on and be loved by the people that we care about. ("Quality" being the major focus of Robert Pirsig's book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, it is in all my dorkdumb that this ... read more

As season ticket holders for the Portland Trailblazers, one of the perks they offer is an evening of games, food, and meeting players. Ticket holders are invited for one of two evenings, with half of the players coming each night. There was a hamburger/hot dog buffet, free video games and bowling, and players there to meet and get a photo with. Pretty neat perk for ticket holders that just about makes it worth the four times we have to see Minnesota every year. Whether you were bowling with Steve Blake and Joel Przybilla, pop-a-shot with Rudy and Sergio Rodriguez, air hockey with Nic Batum, or rock band with Channing Frye, it was very cool to see players outside the normal context. Where else will I run into Michael Ruffin and welcome he and his kids to ... read more

Today we left for New Zealand by way of Portland, OR. I spent the whole night before packing; I didn't get any sleep at all! Apparently I packed pretty well though. Austin was impressed @ how little I was able to take in terms of weight because we learned that we had a strict weight limit (carry on's included) for the flight to New Zealand which was far less than within the states. The flight was easy enough. We got there a little late which made the security agent @ the gate scrutinize my every move and do another special inspection of my boarding pass and ID right before I got on the plane … but not of Austin's. We arrived and Nic picked us up as soon as he got out of class. We then ... read more

I was nervous as I tried to find parking near VOZ. I had called and I knew they were expecting me, but still, I was concerned that I would just be taking up their time. While waiting for a stop light, I saw the first of what would be many instances of a truck pulling up to a corner. This was a corner near the VOZ Worker Center, but about 1 block away. The truck slowed, but didn't stop. Encouraged by the possibility, the men took off in a sprint towards the vehicle with a refrigerator tied in the back. With an intensity that would shame or honor any high-pressure salesman, they honed in on the windows of the truck. Within a few seconds, a few of the men were in the truck and driving away. ... read more
