mmmmm......apple pancake
One of our favorites, smothered in cinnamon-y goodness! February26 - March 3rd 2006
Our second day in Oregon started out perfectly; a big delicious breakfast from the Original Pancake House, our #1 spot (#2 was yesterday!). We went with my parents, Judith and our friends Steve and Jessica. This place is so popular on the weekends we always go early, as in 7am, but it's sooooooo worth it. Dutch babies and apple pancakes! We included the photos of the menu for the sake of Phil's coworkers. A western breakfast is all but nonexistent in Malaysia, let alone a two page menu! My parents left after breakfast and we did some shopping and prep for our Mardi Gras blowout on Tuesday.
That night our friends Jessica and Steve had us and some other friends over to their new condo for enchiladas. Yum! Mexican meal #3 after being home only 36 hours! We could almost get used to this.... We were also introduced to their unbelievably cute new kitten Maeby. For any of you who watch Arrested Development (the BEST show on TV) that name should sound familiar. :-) We had a great time visiting and unsucessfully tried to show them the Little Britan (also a great show) DVD
The Menu
It's SO big........ we borrowed from our friends in Penang. Dang region encoding!
Monday we spent doing more prep work for the party and adjusting to the time and cold.
Tuesday: Party Day!!!!!!!!! While Judith and Phil were at work I went to Judith's house to finish getting ready for the party. We have had quite a few of these parties so we're pretty streamlined in the setup. Please don't be alarmed at the number of bottles of alcohol on the counter! Most of them are half empty. :-) haa haa Good times! We did have a great party, pretty good turn out for a weeknight.
The rest of the week we spent getting our tax stuff together. Since we have been overseas the taxes, at least for Phil, get pretty complicated. Fortunately his work has farmed out our taxes for last year and this year to one of the Big Four. We still essentially have to "do" our taxes, but the firm does the official numbers and filing.
Wednesday we went to one of our favorite McMenamins pubs, Imbrie Hall. Good beer, good food and good friends. We managed to get the Little Britan DVDs to play on
The Menu
.....it takes two pictures to show it all! (this is mostly for the benefit of Phil's coworkers, :-) Phil's laptop and had people over to watch some of it. So frickin' hillarious!!!! Go out and get yourself some!
Thursday was our big night to have our friends over and chill. We had some of our favorite beer, Pyramid Apricot ale, and some home cooking, beer-cheese soup! Add to that one of our all-time favorite movies, Office Space, and I can't think of a better night. Jessica and Steve brought over Maeby for us to enjoy one last time and she stole the evening. Just too cute! We stayed up pretty late that night packing and sank into one last night of sleep in a fluffy bed.
We were up early Friday morning to catch our noon flight. It was so cold that morning that our cars were frosty and Phil had to defrost mine before his coffee run. One last cup of NW goodness! Judith again took time from her day to run us to the airport. We checked in, bought some salt water taffy for Phil's coworkers (another strange US treat) and had our last Oregon meal: hot dogs. Not just any dog, fabulous Polish dogs. So good!!!!!! On our flight out we had an
amazing view of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams and the foothills covered in snow. What do I miss about home? Exactly that!
Our flights home were just fine. In Singapore Phil's dad met us at the airport to pick up some things we brought over for them. Since we had a 6 hour layover he convinced us, very easily I might say, to come back to the apartment and get some real sleep. Eventhough it was 2am, Phil's mom sweetly got up and made us some toast with lox! Moms are so great!! We got 2 hours of fully-horizontal sleep, more than we'd had in the past 22 hours. Those two hours felt like 8! Good thing, too, since out taxi to the airport dropped us off at the wrong terminal and had to walk to the other terminal. We flew through KL and on to Penang. Home again, well, home for another two months. It was a great trip home and we can't wait to go home for good!!
