So good you need a mini-shovel!
Phil and his triple chocolate extravaganza. March 6th - 19th
We didn't do much our first week and weekend back in Penang from our home visit. Those six days were some of the busiest we have had so far, plus the long plane flights made us sick. The week after, however, we were up and running as usual. We had dinner with our friends Carla and Steven at one of the cutest little restaurants along Gurney Drive: The Crepe Cottage. The proprietress cooks delicious crepe-based food from a tiny outdoor kitchen one order at a time. Because of this, it's a very good idea to get there early. We were the first customers that night so we got our choice of tables and all the cooks attention. And she is VERY attentive! They take your dinner and dessert order at the same time, so as soon as you are done with your dinner she starts your dessert. Dinner was really good! Some of the best chicken I've had here. Phil and I both opted for the ice cream desserts, not the crepes. A good and bad decision. Phil's was great, mine was so-so at best. If you're at a crepe restaurant, go for the crepes!
Looks can be deceiving
Mine didn't taste nearly as good as it looked. Saturday we had a gaming afternoon with some of Phil's coworkers. Munchkin!! For dinner they took us up to Bukit Genting, a crazy hill top dining spot. Don't confuse this with the Genting Highlands, the skeezy gambling resort on the mainland. This place is way, WAY up on the top of a hill on the south end of Penang island. The developers spent quite a bit of money to make the place, originally it was supposed to have animals, and now it exists in relative obscurity. We asked some people, locals, if there was such a place, they said no. Obviously Phil's coworkers knew about it, so we went. For anyone interested I will include directions at the end of this blog. We went up before sunset so we could see it from the hill. It may be difficult to find, and the road is incredibly steep, but the view is worth it! They even have rooms you can rent. Some are built on the side of the hill below the restaurant, some are boats set on concrete with rooms built on top. It's sort of a fairy tale land on crack! Everything is pretty strange and somewhat thrown together,
Batttle station
This is where the proprietress cranks out one delicious crepe-based dinner at a time. but that works for Malaysia. We walked around the site for a while, then had dinner in one of the elevated huts. It was pretty cool!! The food is decent, very spicy Thai, and of course the company was great. When the lights come on at night, that's when it gets really special! Lit up animals, a Merry Christmas sign and a giant spider in a web hanging above you!! The pictures don't do it justice, so I recommend any Penang-ite to visit this place!
Sunday we went out to Monkey Beach again to celebrate our friends Ronda and Denny leaving Penang. It was a much smaller group than last time, 10 people versus almost 50. Ronda and Denny's daughters were here for one last visit and came with us. We had a great time, did some fishing and I caught my first fish! Of course it was tiny and was thrown back, but that feeling of something wriggling on the other end of the line was exciting! The food was once again delicious and the five minute boat ride back to the dock is the perfect ending. Unfortunately I managed not to get a picture of Ronda and
The Crepe Cottage
One of the cutest places on Gurney Drive. Denny! Later that night we attended a going away party for Ronda and Denny, and I forgot my camera. Go me! Anyway, Ronda and Denny, we will miss you so much! You are so fun to be with and we hope everything goes well for you back in the States!

Directions to Bukit Genting: From Georgetown take Green Lane to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and get on the flyover that takes you out to the airport. Stay on the flyover past the airport and just keep going. You will go through some small kampung villages, over some small hills and back down into another village area. After passing this you will head up into the mountains. A ways up you will reach an area where you no longer have a clif on one side, you are between hills, and you will come upong a large white concrete water tank on the right side of the road. Right in that area is a small road off the left side of the road with a very small sign for Bukit Genting. Take this road all the way up. It goes for quite a ways and is VERY
Balik Pulau
Looking down on balik pulau, litteraly "the other side of the island," from Bukit Genting. steep! Manuals not recommended unless you are a good driver. I also recommend you go up in daylight, at least the first time. Coming down isn't as difficult, just make sure your breaks work! The road up to BG is one way, except the bottom 100m, so you don't have to worry about passing cars on the narrow road. Good luck! I say it's worth it at least once.
