After a R&R day on Friday when we enjoyed a lovely lunch with Jane and Billy at an organic farm/restaurant the four of us traveled to Portland on Saturday. An interesting bit of local history is that the early residents were divided on what to name the city, Portland or Boston. Guess it's obvious the Portland votes won. Our first stop was a street fair that's held Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months. Lot of vendors with some very nice handcrafted items and lots of food. (Sylvan bought the last blue eyed buzzard head cane from a craftsman.) It's held near the waterfront in a part of town they're trying to revive. It's also the location of a large homeless shelter a problem Portland shares with most major US cities. We then went off to search for a restaurant called the Horse (something) which was suppose to have good fish and chips. Once again the GPS brought us to our destination. It was located in a neighborhood, not easy to find. Walking in was like walking into an authentic English Pub. It's been here for awhile as the tobacco stains prove, there is no non-smoking section, but the food was
good and luckily it was quiet and no one was smoking. We then retraced our steps to the other side of the city to find parking near PGE Park for the Triple A baseball game Billy had gotten tickets for. The Portland Beavers vs the Las Vegas 51S'. We had a couple of hours to kill so we explored Powell's Books, a local institution that sells new and used books. The place is so big they give you a map. Syl and I picked out enough books on tape and CD's to listen to all the way back home. We then found Jake's restaurant nearby which had also been recommended and while Sylvan enjoyed muscles and beer the rest of us went for coffee and dessert. When we returned to the PGE Park it was obvious that it was scout night. In fact they were having a sleep over in the park after the game. It made me think of Jim and the fact we have never seen him in uniform! The Beavers won 4 to 2, not a bad game but unfortunately the seats were so uncomfortable with NO leg room unless you were 4 feet tall we had
to move in the 4th inning to bleacher seats where we could stretch our legs out. Oh well at least it was bobble, no Bob L. Head, night. Can anyone say Yankee swap? Oh I've forgotten to mention the weather. Finally cool in fact I've even had to put on a coat at times. Sylvan always wears a coat so you can't go by him. We also saw our first rain since we left in fact it started to rain pretty hard on the way home after the game and right through Saturday night.
