On Sunday 2nd March Gillian arrived to stay for a week. She had been at a conference in San Diego and flew into Eugene. Her flight arrived on time and although tired I showed her our local supermarket which is quite a sight in itself! Gillian manged to spend the next few days enjoying a well earned rest at the house whilst I worked. In the evenings we visited the mall, a couple of local wineries and had a drink in a local wine bar with Tracy and Julia.
I finished school on Wednesday and we headed straight for the coast. We drove first to Florence and then north to Yachats. I was so excited as when we stopped just as we were entering Florence a little otter popped its head out the water to look at us. As we drove along the coast the sun was setting and we arrived at Overleaf just in time for dinner. After putting our things in the room we borrowed a couple of flashlights from the hotel and walked into town along the coastal track. We had a couple of options for dinner and decided on the Drift Inn. Great choice as it was
lovely food and music too. After dinner we went in for a drink at The Landmark Pub which, let's just say, was interesting. The receptionist in our hotel very kindly picked us up and gave us a lift home.
The next morning (Thursday) we had a nice relaxed breakfast and slowly made our way back down the coast to Florence as we had a trail ride booked. En route we took photos of the AMAZING scenery. In the clear blue sky I have to say this is one of my favourite parts of the world. It is so peaceful and breathtaking.
Our trail ride allowed us to enjoy equally breathtaking scenery. It was 2 hours which took us along the beach and then back through the dunes. Gillian's horse was called Kansas and my horse was called Nugget. We cantered on the beach and again there was not another person about! Loved it!
After the ride we headed into Florence and got a late lunch and had a wee look round the shops and took some piccies. By the time we drove back up north to Yachats all we had time for was a hot tub, poor us !!!! hahaha!!
After a nice hot tub (and although by this stage we both had the cold) we headed back into town to the same restaurant as the previous night to enjoy more lovely food and music. Can I add that somewhere along the way we both claimed a mutual agreement that Oregon wines, especially King's Estate's pinot gris, are sooo nice.
On the Friday morning we both woke up sniffing but luckily we had treatments booked. Gillian had a massage and I had a facial so again poor us!!We really suffered in the name of science haha!!
After our treatments finished we checked out of Overleaf Lodge and drove north. We stopped in Newport to let Gillian see the sea lions and grab some lunch. Then we headed east towards the freeway. By late afternoon we reached Woodburn and, you guessed it, another shopping opportunity! The outlet mall there let Gillian grab some bargains and I grabbed a late lunch.
We arrived in downtown Portland at around 5pm and chilled out in our rooms with some champagne that Gillian had brought to celebrate my 30th and her 40th! After drinking our champagne we got a taxi to the Portland Grill where
we had a nice meal. Then we headed to Kells for some Irish music and dancing.
Finally on our last day together, slightly worse for wear, mainly as a result of our colds I have to say, we headed out. We had a great breakfast at Mother's and then to Macy's and Pioneer Place. From there we got a taxi to the Japanese Gardens and then the bus further up the hill. The Max then took us down the hill and we wandered towards 23rd St, one of my favourite streets. Whilst there we chilled out in the sun with some cake and a rather chatty guy recommended some other places for us to try that night for food and drinks. As Gillian was going to have an early start for her flight on Sunday we decided to take the streetcar through Pearl and back to our hotel and chill out for a while. That night we ended up trying Saucebox a kind of asian restaurant. I loved the food; it was delicious.
Sadly Gillian left early on Sunday morning. It was wonderful to see her and we really had a fantastic week. It was so kind of her to
Gillian in Florence
Yet another wine bar hehehe! come and visit. I recommend anyone to take the same route we did as the scenery, places are amazing. I can't wait to get home and share an Oregon memories night with Gillian when I get back.
