Thursday: An early start saw us head off to a local diner for pancakes (not a small portion), bacon, maple syrup and endless coffee. The size and quantity of the pancakes defeated both of us - and we were also somewhat surprised that the locals placed the bacon on top of the pancakes and then smothered the lot in the syrup. Each to his own!! The point of the early start was a visit to the Shinnecock Indian Reserve - well worth getting up early for!! The afternoon was our first relaxing break of the holiday - sitting on the decking, overlooking the sea and reading a book. After an early cup of coffee, we packed, checked out and grabbed a taxi to Union Station (remembering to tip the bell-boy!!). Following type, the driver needed little encouragement to offer us the benefit of his political beliefs. As a staunch democrat his views were dramatically different from those of the Friday's taxi-driver. Union Station provided a substantial breakfast (bacon & egg croissant, fruit, juice with endless coffee) but no solution to our lack of mobile (make that cell-phone) reception problem. We bumped into the Wakefield couple from the hotel and they showed us the 'catching a train' ropes - one queues up at a gate and then makes a dask for a seat, EasyJet-style. This will be one of those very quick entries. The Hamptons is just across the water from us, but on any given day it could be anywhere from a 90 minute to a 4 hour drive. Especially during weekends in the summer this can be a brutal drive. We made the drive in late June on a Saturday. It actually was not too bad. We drove down the main road from Westhampton Beach all the way to East Hampton - a really pretty drive for the views, the houses, cars, the little towns and the eclectic stores. We made a quick stop at Tate's Bakeshop in Southampton. I love their chocolate chip cookies and their pies are to die for (same with the prices).
