Thursday: An early start saw us head off to a local diner for pancakes (not a small portion), bacon, maple syrup and endless coffee. The size and quantity of the pancakes defeated both of us - and we were also somewhat surprised that the locals placed the bacon on top of the pancakes and then smothered the lot in the syrup. Each to his own!! The point of the early start was a visit to the Shinnecock Indian Reserve - well worth getting up early for!!

The afternoon was our first relaxing break of the holiday - sitting on the decking, overlooking the sea and reading a book. The relaxation was well-timed because at 5.30pm, Richard (Christine's son) pitched up with his family - I can confirm that American kids of 3 and 8 are at least as lively as their British counterparts!!

Friday: A leisurely start was followed by a decent stroll down Towd Point Beach, a mile or so from Christine. We had this to ourselves - I guess the holiday season is well and truly over. In the afternoon we relaxed again, sorted out our train tickets (NYC 2 Boston) and skyped the mothers. In the evening we went down to the beach where there was a classic car meet and a live band. We had a chat with a few car owners (whose mechanical knowledge was somewhat lacking) and then headed for the music tent. Huddling together with hot cups of coffee we were put to shame by the large number of silver-dancers who discoed the night away. The nine piece band were tight and were good musicians and singers, but the playlist of standard 70's disco wasn't to our taste

How else?
Trust me, piling the bacon on top of pancakes and smothering them with syrup is THE only way to eat the combination. Bliss.
