Bright lights, big city. New York City is it. As long as you don't drag your feet behind and go with the flow, you'll be fine. Regardless of your opinion about big cities, Manhattan will take your breath away. It's very much like on TV. Yellow cabs, huge department stores, poor people, rich people. Of course there is more to it than that. But why seek the sidestreets when Broadway is right there...? Madison Square Garden wasn't destroyed by Godzilla, and it wasn't destroyed by terrorists. Game on. Rockefeller Center is almost like on TV just before Christmas. The giant Christmas tree with about a million lights is standing there, like always. The ice skating rink is not as spontaneous as it seems though. It's not very big. People are waiting in line for hours before ... read more

After my sophmore year at UWEC Jordan, Brock, Jeff, Nate and I went on a road trip to the east coast where we went to 5 different MLB stadiums. We were in NYC for about 3 days and saw the Yankees and the Mets. We also got to walk around Manhattan a couple of days and we got to see the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown which is located in upstate NY. My favorite part of the whole trip may have been when we were approaching NYC and we could see the skyline from like 40 min away . . . when we got to Manhattan we looked like fish out of water with 5 guys packed into a small 94 Dodge Shadow with Wisconsin plates.... read more

We were due to arrive in New York in the late evening, so again we were taking no chances and we’d booked ahead. The hostel was on the 24th floor of a hotel on 43rd Street. Finding it was a doodle, once we’d worked out in which direction the street names go up and in which direction they go down. Anywhere else, the view from that high up would be fantastic, but in New York all we could see was the side of the higher building opposite. We loved New Your, despite the fact that everything was almost 50% more expensive than on the West Coast and being constantly asked whether I wanted to buy any drugs started to get extremely annoying. Obviously I had been travelling too long and I looked like someone who took ... read more

The 1968 Los Angeles Geographical Society trip to Africa began with a TWA transcontinental flight from Los Angeles to New York. This was the heyday of TWA's "Foreign Accent" service wherein flight attendants wore all sorts of exotic getup with a supposed foreign theme. Our were outfitted in gold lame minidresses, a French accent. It was also the heyday of JFK Airport as the dominant gateway for overseas airline traffic to and from the USA. Many airlines had built monumental terminals at JFK. We arrived at the TWA Flight Center (Terminal 5) and transferred to the Pan American Worldport (Terminal 3). Pan Am flight 150 left New York at 5:00 p.m. for West Africa destinations. Our first stop was to be Abidjan. The DC-8 made intermediate stops at Dakar and Monrovia. I recall at Senegal an ... read more

The day after our visit to the World’s Fair, my mother and I took a morning Gray Line motor coach sightseeing tour of Manhattan. This was my first visit to New York City. The tour bus took us around Manhattan, stopping by the United Nations Building and Lincoln Center, passing through Times Square, and then driving along Central Park to Harlem. Later, we went up the Empire State Building for a view from the observation deck and made a trip out to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty up close. Our hotel was the Park-Sheraton Hotel, near Times Square, an imposing brick edifice from the 1920s that looked like my conception of a big city hotel. We had tickets one evening for the musical Funny Girl at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. Barbara ... read more
