So much time has passed and what a change from Costa Rica!!! After the flights and delays I finally got to La Guardia at around 2.30am, by then a pretty deserted airport. With luck not really on my side, my backpack lost somewhere between Atlanta and New York, the SuperShuttle not turning up for another 2 hours I decided I would rather pay 40 dollars for a cab than wait! I wanted to get to my sister's place ASAP so that I would FINALLY be able to get some sleep. It was great to see my sister and her boyfriend Floris who had been visiting that week. The much-needed sleep was great and I felt a whole lot better the next morning. We had a tasty brunch near to Columbia University, and I was enjoying people ... read more

Hi all! Sitting here in Kennedy Airport I'm about an hour and a half till departure. I will fly approximately ten hours to Moscow, go through customs there (with my visa- yay!) and fly a few hours later to St. Petersburg, where I will study for six weeks. I'm hoping I can really activate my Russian-- and of course increase it, though I will have to work to make sure I take linguistic "risks" and don't just be the quietly unobtrusive one hanging out and asking simple questions. I will be visiting museums as often as I can. I also intend to find out soon if I can get a library card to work on my reading skills and hopefully memorise some poetry. I'll try to take lots of pictures and write descriptive entries. For now, ... read more

Last American Post. It's 4:30 am on the day I leave and I'm packing and repacking and rerepacking. It's madness. I'm wired and exhausted like the tail end of a guarana pill. Crap! I can hear birds chirping. And Polish Hip Hop. I'm not sure which distresses me more. Today Howie and I were maxin out in the pool and the Sam, the family German Shepard, took off after a chipmunk and bagged it. He climbed out of the pool and slid it on to a shovel and tossed it over the fence. He chuckled and said, "He's not coming back. And if he does, I'm outta here." I have been looking at my reflection way too much these last few days. I'm listening to the sound of my voice, feeling the rate of my breath, ... read more

The Cloisters, situated in beautiful Fort Tyrone Park in Upper Manhattan. The Cloisters is an extension of the Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art of medieval Europe. The Cloisters, opened in 1938, incorporates architectural monuments carefully transported from Europe and reconstructed in a building specifically designed to evoke rather than imitate the monasteries, churches and halls of medieval times. Two hours is just enough time to engage your creative and imaginative faculties, and not enough time to soak in all the history. This is one of those places you find yourself running back to time and time again. One of the attractive features in this museum were the gardens. The gardens of the Cloisters represent both real and ideal gardens of the Middle Ages. Archaeological investigations of medieval garden sites is relatively new, and ... read more

In March I entered a contest sponsored by American Airlines entitled “Why You Fly” in which entrants were required to create videos, photos, or writing telling a story as to why they fly. My entry won the grand prize in the video category. The prize consisted of twelve flights for two people from any American to city to any worldwide destination that American Airlines services. The flight vouchers would have to be used within one year or forfeited. Upon my notification of the prize, I was very excited, as my wife and I love to travel, and have done so frequently on American Airlines. I had worked hard creating my video entry, and I felt that my work had been justly rewarded. However, when I received the winner’s package, I noticed some fine print that indicated ... read more

Got up tired again!! Only 2hrs sleep, it doesn’t seem to stop or get any better!! Going to Annapolis, the Capital of Maryland and home to the US Naval Academy, we were all fairly quiet and not particularly energetic. The town was preparing for the Memorial Day Parade. We went for a quick walk then back on the bus, crossed the Potomac and stopped in to see the ‘Rocky’ Statue in Philadelphia. Richard Gere is from Phili. We made our way through Philadelphia where we went and saw the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, (although it was a little disappointing that the queue was too long to go inside) - which is where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution where signed - these are founding documents of the USA. The bell was brought to Phili ... read more

Washington finale -- When in DC you must do the MONUMENTS - the imposing Lincoln; the classically beautiful Jefferson; the understated Vietnem etc are all unforgetable. So on our last full day we went to Arlington, walked over the Potomac to two of our favourites. The Korean War memorial with its 19 larger then life foot soldiers slogging through paddy fields ( 19 cos when reflected you see 38 ='s the 38th parallel). We've been there in the snow, in autumn and now in spring and the impact is always the same and as you walk alongside the struggling determined men, the futility of war is clear. By contrast FDR's memorial by the water is over an extensive area. You walk through and around walls, pools and falls flowing over granite slabs with words and quotes ... read more

I haven't been home in almost two years and now calling it "home" feels funny. I have to say it's really nice to be at mom's house after so much time away. It's been great seeing so many friends. It sucks not having time to see everyone. New York is completelly different of course, I left in 2001 so I'm like a pre-9/11 New Yorker. The city is very different now. Everything is much more expensive but I did come here with Euros so I take advantadge of the Dollar being so low. New York is crazy and I see alot of things I don't like here. People seem completely preocupied with things I don't care so much about anymore so there's a little rift between me and everyone, specially my family. I hate to say ... read more

A cidade e totalmente diferente agora.
