So much time has passed and what a change from Costa Rica!!!
After the flights and delays I finally got to La Guardia at around 2.30am, by then a pretty deserted airport. With luck not really on my side, my backpack lost somewhere between Atlanta and New York, the SuperShuttle not turning up for another 2 hours I decided I would rather pay 40 dollars for a cab than wait! I wanted to get to my sister's place ASAP so that I would FINALLY be able to get some sleep. It was great to see my sister and her boyfriend Floris who had been visiting that week.
The much-needed sleep was great and I felt a whole lot better the next morning. We had a tasty brunch near to Columbia University, and I was enjoying people watching. It was great being in such a big city with all the "amenities", I guess I hadn't really realised that I had missed that in Costa Rica as well. I was expecting a bit more of a culture shock!
That afternoon Helen brought Floris to the airport and I got another
6 hours of sleep. In the evening we met up with
Central Park
How easy it is to get lost, but you're rewarded with views like these.. two of Helen's friends, Eva and Corinne, and had some great Italian food. We went to a funky Moroccan style nightclub in the East Village afterwards, Le Souk. Very cool!! And pricey...but I guess that's something that everyone has to get used to in NYC!
The next days I explored the city by myself during the day while Helen went off to work (she's an intern at the UN). I had to take this opportunity to take a tour of the UN (of course!!) which was very interesting. I actually left the country in the time I was at the UN!!! (It's officially international territory) Other days, I spent a few hours strolling through Central Park (I had great weather for most of my time in the city), I went to the Guggenheim, and to the Met (there was a Chanel exhibit that attracted me 😉. Helen and I also went to see a women's NBA game, Liberty New York against Detroit Shock. Great atmosphere, and afterwards we met one of the players in the restaurant, she was from Belgium. Great to see someone taller than us (she was about 1.95m!!!!!), well ...she pretty much towered over us actually.
Sunset through skyscrapers
In Bryant Park (Broadway under the stars) On the Monday evening there was a special event in Bryant Park, "Broadway under the Stars". A huge crowd waiting to save their spot for the show, there were guards keeping everyone off the grass until at 6pm the huge group of people stormed onto the grass with blankets and towels, and before you knew it there was no grass to be seen. We still had to wait around 3 hours until the show so we went to get snacks, wine and dinner. The show was great, hosted by Christina Applegate and with a lot of male Broadway stars singing (not so famous) Broadway hits. Good stuff!!
My parents arrived on the 16th of June, so great to see them after 3 months!! They were too tired to do anything apart from have dinner, so I met up with my friend Rachel, who I'd met in Costa Rica!!! She was in the city after working at a camp in upstate New York with some of her friends. We met at Grand Central and strolled around the city, and ended up in a not-so-special pizza place (it was about 11pm, choices were slim) but it didn't matter, it was
so great to catch up.
The next morning me and Rachel met up again quickly for a breakfast at Union Square, at the Farmer's Market. Great fresh fruit juices and fresh baked goods..hmmm. Really cool that they still have that in the middle of such a huge city. After that I met up with my parents and we checked out the huuuge new MOMA....too much to see, but we tried until we couldn't walk anymore. (well, you know) From there we went to TimesSquare and queued up at the TKTS ticketbox to find us some tickets to a good Broadway show and ended up going to 'La Cage aux Folles' which was an amazing show!! Mostly men dressed as women, and amazingly convincing!!! And flexible!! After the show, we went to the 47th floor of the Marriott (where the theatre was) and had a cup of tea/beer in the rotating restaurant, some great views of the city. What a great way to end my stay in NY!!
The next day I took off, onto my next "project" for the summer, camp in New Hampshire. I'll try and update soon, but Internet access is a little more difficult to
find out here in the woods!! (sharing 2 computers between ALL the staff!)

I love NY
Liefs Helen
