Early start, we have a 09:30 flight, but we want to be at the airport for 06:30. We get the airport bus to terminal 3 at Heathrow ( after an initial hiccup when I think that we are going to terminal 4, which is actually our arrival terminal at JFK!!) Anyhow we arrive at terminal 3 at around 06:30. The Virgin check -in area is fairly quiet and we check in with no problem and get fast tracked to the Virgin Lounge.
The Virgin Lounge is really neat with a restaraunt, waiter service and even a pool table. It is the first lounge that I have been in that has piped music which is really good stuff like Simply Red etc. We eat breakfast and have a few bucks fizz. Di goes for a facial which is available in the Spa that is in the lounge. Before long it is time to board the flight. The plane is brand new to the Virgin fleet. Once on board we have some more champagne!!. The flight is really good, it takes just under 7 hours. We watch movies, both Di and I watched a movie called "Dependents" with George Clooney - a bit
of a "tear-jerker.
The flight was really good - I am very impressed with Virgin Atlantic.
We clear Immigration and Customs with no problems. and catch a yellow cab to our hotel. We are staying at the Beacon Hotel in uptown Manhattan on Broadway and 75th Street. The ride takes about 40mins and costs $65. We are on a tour organised by Great Rail Journeys, We are on an earlier flight than the rest of the group and arrive in New York at around midday. The rest of the tour will arrive at around 18:00. We spend sometime exploring the local area and stop for a drink in a local bar called Luxembourg. We visit the Dakota Building where John Lennon was shot and killed. And also visit Strawberry Fields in the nearby Central Park. This is a quiet area that has been set aside in memory of John Lennon.
In the evening we have booked to see "Jersey Boys" on Broadway. We leave the hotel early as we intend to eat dinner before the show. We ask the doorman to get us a taxi, and he strides out into the road blowing a whistle - a very brave man considering the Broadway traffic- but it is effective and we get our taxi.
We eat at an Italian Trattoria on Broadway. It was hardly by choice as we were virtually dragged into the restaurant by the guy on the sidewalk who gave us the “hard-sell” on the restaurant. We had an enjoyable meal
The “Jersey Boys” was really good, and with the music coming from our era, we both enjoyed it. I had booked Saturday night, as being the only feasible time in our short stay in New York. What I forgot to "factor-in" was “jet-lag” and time difference. By the time the show had finished, it was 3 a.m by our body clocks and we were both flagging. We made our way back to the Beacon Hotel initially by foot, but then managing to flag down a cab.
We both collapsed into bed exhausted
