On my fridge...
From Olivia, Kathryn, and Reza Wednesday is not only hump day it is also double play day, so Wednesday morning I go directly to the TKTS booth to get a ticket for the matinee. "Catch Me If You Can," is getting rave reviews and Tony nominations so although it wasn't on my original list, I decided I needed to see it.
With ticket in hand and hours to spare, I head uptown on the subway, on the west side of Central Park. My eventual destination is Lady M Cake Boutique, at 78th and Madison on the east side, rated as having one of the best cheesecakes in NY. The cheesecake tour has been a great way to see various sections of Manhattan. Some people go towards museums or other tourist attractions, others go to areas to shop, I go to places with good cheesecake. So while I'm walking down Fifth Ave. with the upper westside women with their bags from Prada and Gucci, I'm carrying my bag from Lady M's! I did take pictures of several museums. Does that count?
Anyway...first I have to get across Central Park which is part of the adventure. I get lost pretty easily as most of you know;
I have no sense of direction and Central Park is not exactly user friendly. So I am walking around thoroughly enjoying the scenery, taking pictures, soaking up the sunshine, and get absolutely lost. I have no idea where I am or where I'm going. I bring out the old iPhone, and all I can tell is that every way I go I'm getting further from where I'm supposed to be going. Is there a compass on that thing? Anyway, I approach a woman doing some serious power walking which is normal speed to me, and she leads me out of the park and to the "transverse," which takes me across the park to 5th Avenue on the east side. I amble down to the Cake Boutique, seeing the sights along the way, get my piece of cheesecake which they totally call something else that I should have written down, but didn't, and catch a subway back to my apt in time to catch my 2:00 matinee. It was just a great way to spend the morning and early afternoon. I just can't tell you how much I love what I'm doing. It's just exactly what I envisioned.
The play
was wonderful, absolutely a favorite! I sat by an older gentleman who loved to talk about plays so we had quite the discussion! From there I went directly back to the TKTS booth for an evening play ticket. Again "Sister Act" was not on my original list but it has been nominated for best musical, so I thought I'd better see it. (And I was not disappointed! It was wonderful!) After getting my ticket, I thought perhaps I should eat so I just went back to my little apt and did. In the meantime, I have to say that the fact I have to leave NY became a reality when my landlord emailed me, asked me if I wanted to stay longer, and when I said no, told me he had two showings he needed to tell me about. Oh well...all good things must end, right?
This morning I got up early, took care of some business, (like getting 8 tickets for "Mary Poppins" for Saturday; guess who's coming to town?!) and then headed even further uptown to 110th St. and The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of NY, and the largest
Cathedral in the world. This experience was just beyond words. And the pictures are completely unworthy of the beauty and massiveness of this amazing place. I got there just in time for a tour which I immediately realized I needed to take because it was too much to take in on my own. I won't go on and on but I will say that from the front to the back is the size of two football fields plus one football. To all of my Episcopal friends especially, I would highly recommend a visit if you're ever in NY and to anyone else interested, maybe their website has good pictures. It takes up two city blocks each way, and includes a K-8 school. I was going to go to the 12:15 weekday service in one of seven chapels inside the sanctuary but decided that with three Sundays left in my trip, even though I won't be living in NY, I have to go to a Sunday service.
The church is located in what is called Morningside Heights, and 110th is the street at the top of Central Park. So after my time at the church, I walked through Morningside Park
and over to Central Park which is much more navigable at that part. I followed in the park along 110th to 5th Ave. walked down to 97th, which is known as Museum Mile, "saw" some more museums, and took the 96th St. transverse (which is actually at 97th, go figure) and went back through the park to the west side. The park is of course breathtakingly beautiful and the weather was as well. At some point I realized that pictures that I can take just don't do it justice and I need to just stop! I am fascinated by the many nannies and mannies, the dog walkers walking so many dogs at once, the field trips with kids of all ages, all kinds of people having lunch in the park, just the overall use of this massive green space surrounded by high rises and skyscrapers. A very unique place. I love this place.
