And so it begins. It is still dark, actually it is also a little chilly tonight but luckily I am already in the warm cabin of the five o'clock train to New York City. I am so grateful to Matthias who dropped me off to the train station. It was hard to say goodbye to Dr. Bose and Dr. Higgs. I am missing them already but I am lucky that I have friends such as Matze, Janneane, Liz and Nick who are a big reason why this trip is even possible. I am in the so called 'quite cabin'. First time that I have heard about this. Perhaps, due to the fact that I have never travelled this early on the train to NYC. The cabin is modestly full. Most people are continuing with their much ... read more

The Hudson River School Artist and one of America's most important painters, Frederick Church, fashioned Olana in the style of a Moorish castle. Church's family home (and studio) is situated high atop a mountain along the Hudson River between Germantown and the City of Hudson, NY. Our visit to Olana was in the late fall of 2011, but things don't change at Olana. In fact, the housewares, art, books, and souveniers from Frederick Church and family's significant voyages abroad are virtually intact - just as they were when they lived there. The property is part of the New York State Park's system. The paintings, sculpture and furnishings Frederic and Isabel Church acquired over the course of their lives was described by a 19th century guest as, "a museum of fine arts rich in bronzes, paintings, sculptures ... read more

At 11.00 am went along with Nandhini to Subzi Mandi and then to Little Flower montessori School to pick up Sahana. Had a peep of classroom from outside. Fixed an appointment to take a tour of the classrooms at 3.30pm tomorrow..which is after school hours. Not allowed inside during school hours. Had lunch of keerai kootu and omlette. Packed egg sandwiches for the bus tour. Nandhini dropped us at Metuchen station at 1.30pm on the way to Sahana's Ballet class. Walked from Penn Station at 7th avenue for quite a distance..down 5 blosks to 12th avenue to NYC Sightseeing Cruise. Was just on time for the last 4.00pm cruise. The cruise on the Hudson river lasted an hour..was okay. After cruise had to walk back 5 blocks down 42nd street to catch the bus for the ... read more

The HUDSON VALLEY has become one of our favorite spots. A funky area with many, many small towns - each unique in its own way. An area where we have spend many a weekend just driving and driving - discovering road after road and town after town. It all started with the HUDSON VALLEY SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL in Garrison, NY. A more perfect setting for a Shakespeare production (or any other production for that matter) there probably is not. Nestled on the banks of the Hudson river straight across from the West Point Academy sits a little piece of property with orchards, beautiful lawns and a white tent pitched for a Shakespeare play performance like no other. We made the "trek" up to the venue really not knowing what to expect. We got there and found people ... read more

The City of Hudson is known for it's architecture. Established in the 1820s as the largest inland whaling port in the US by refugees from Nantucket, it began life as a copy of a New England seaport town. Rumor has it that some of the actual houses first erected were shipped in bundles from from the same mills and housewrights who built most of the old Nantucket houses. The remaining early houses certainly wouldn't be stylistically out of place on Nantucket's streets. Through the ups and downs of the nearly two centuries of its existence, the City has become home to a multiplicity of architectural styles, leading it to be dubbed "a museum of American Architectural style." Famed Photographer Lynn Davis did a series of architectural portraits of the buildings along the mile long Warren Street ... read more
