Shawne and Jo say... Day 24 Mileage Today: 27.8 Total Mileage: 920.4 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 27 I woke around 4:30 a.m. to find that Jo couldn't sleep well. She told me of these strange dreams she'd been having all night. One was of a mutant mouse with a three foot long tail that made a terrible hissing sound. In her dream, I would tell her, "Stop making that noise, Jo. You are depressed! You need some medication!" Then she had a dream that she was standing outside our tent and saw a man in a white hooded sweatshirt standing in the brush on the other side of the river. When he noticed her, he would disappear into the bushes. Jo said she had these dreams over and over throughout the night. She said that ... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 23 Mileage Today: 24.5 Total Mileage: 892.6 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 27 We've heard of a city that is showing great promise of growth and prosperity due to the location of the first ever Space Port nearby. The town used to be called Hot Springs, because of the abundance of natural hot springs throughout the downtown area. The water is piped into tubs and pools, and the locals charge tourists to bathe in the healing waters. Back in the 1950's, a radio show called "Truth or Consequences" put out a nationwide search for a small town to change it's name to that of the show. The people of Hot Springs put it to a vote, and Truth or Consequences, NM was born. Private trips to outer space by civilians willing ... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 22 Mileage Today: 57.5 Total Miles: 868.1 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 27 Last night, Manuel locked the German Shepherd inside the horse trailer so he wouldn't bother us. The puppy wanted us to play with him, so he'd wake us up, snooping around our bikes and scratching at the door to the tent. The German Shepherd, however, was so upset that he was locked up while strangers were present, he barked and whined all night. Farm workers were in and out of the front gate in pickups and on foot, headed for the shop behind the house. A strange snorting noise cam from across the street, and we assume it was a Javelina. In the middle of the night, Jo broke out a set of earplugs which were attached to ... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 21 Miles Today: 26.2 Total Mileage: 810.6 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 27 Who's great idea was it to do this trip in Winter? It was ridiculously cold last night. Shawne woke up around 4 a.m. and checked the thermometer at the RV park. It was 35 degrees! BRRRRRRR!!! Shawne went back to sleep, snuggling with Jo to keep warm. We woke a few hours later and walked to the library to see what time they opened. Then we went to the gas station for fuel for our campstove (.50 on pump 3!) and went to the grocery store for supplies. Back at camp, we made breakfast and boiled the remaining eggs to enjoy later. Wepacked up camp and headed for the library (wishing they'd been open yesterday-our day off!). On ... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 20 Miles Today: ZERO Flats Today: ZERO Yippee skippy! Day off today. We did laundry. We washed all the road grime and grasshopper guts off our bikes. We saw our first signs of Fall yesterday, and they are evident again in our campsite today. It's colder than we expected, but it's manageable. The big storm that was supposed to roll in today never showed up. We rested. We ate beef-heart hamburgers for dinner and hung out around the campsite. Lazy day. We deserved it.... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 19 Miles Today: 39.1 Total Mileage: 784.4 Flats Today: 2 Total Flats: 27 The rain kept Jo up most of the night. She had a nightmare that a character from 'House of 1000 Corpses' (named Tiny) cut Shawne's head off and came to the tent to get her. "Can I have him back?", she asked Tiny. He handed her Shawne's head, and she pulled out the Marine Corps knife that is mounted on Shawne's bicycle and stabbed Tiny over and over and over, then she awoke, sitting straight up in bed. The rain wouldn't let up. We decided riding in it didn't sound like the best idea in the world, so we made it a morning for laundry and showers. We didn't have any laundry soap, so Shawne started the washer, ... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 18 Miles Today: 46.1 Total Miles: 745.3 Flats Today: 2 Total Flats: 25 Waking up before sunrise, we prepared a breakfast of leftover tacos. Forest Service workers began to show up at the Ranger Station for work. Arriving in the dark last night gave us little knowledge of our surroundings. It turned out that this Ranger Station was fairly large, with many outbuildings and 20-30 government vehicles including fire apparatus and ATV's. there were even horses in a corral in the back. The horses! That's what was making all the strange noise last night! We laughed at ourselves because we thought it was someone trying to break into one of the buildings! As the sun rose, it exposed the enormous Morenci copper mine on the other side of the valley. We ... read more

After several failed attempts to connect with people back home, and because of our inneptness with email, we are now trying this travel blog. So here you have it -- our travel retrospective!!! Yes, it all started on August 1, when Theresa and the boys left Albuquerque with a very full car bound for Denver, Colorado to visit our dear friends, Chris and Shannon and Sean and Kelsey. We all had a great time. The boys' favorite part was Pirate's Cove. After a few wonderful days of relaxation and pampering, we headed to Tucson, Arizona, stopping for a quick overnight back in Albuquerque to say goodbye to our dog, Stella, just one more time, and to wish Maggie a happy birthday! We were in Tucson, for not even 12 hours, but it was just enough time ... read more

Every year in mid-June I head up to the mountains of Raton, NM. My Dad is there for a old-west style gunshoot at the NRA gun range there. I am there for the scenery and wild life. The elk this summer were really feeling the drought. They hovered around water tanks even in the mid-day heat. There did not seem to be as many babies out either as in previous years. We were warned by the Range Master that the black bears were moving out of the mountains due to lack of water. It was very dry but very beautiful.... read more

On the way to Santa Fe: We drove all the way through Texas. It was a really long trip, that's when you realize how big Texas is. The scenery also changes dramatically. We drove through some desert and oil fields. You could drive for more than 100 miles and not see one town, one gas station.... total nothingness. Once we crossed the border to New Mexico, total scenery change again. Completely different architecture and culture. Santa Fe is a colorful city full of arts and crafts. Beautiful furniture and woodwork are everywhere. Art galleries line up along several streets and all kinds of art is displayed everywhere, indoors and outdoors. We went to a "Pueblo" named Taos which was described to us as an authentic indian town that was still active. We went there with high ... read more
