GOOD FELLOWSHIP GONE AWRY Clay Allison was a fine stockman and successfully operated a ranch near Cimarron in partnership with his brother, John. Clay was respected in the community, but he was awfully fond of the bottle. No matter how drunk things got he was never afraid to stand behind principles of good citizenship where needed; with a blazing six-gun if necessary. In the fall of 1870 a man named Charles Kennedy stood accused in Elizabethtown on several counts of murder and robbery. When it looked as if Kennedy might go free Clay was among a merry band of citizens who stormed the jail, lynched Kennedy, and allegedly chopped off his head and mounted it on a pole outside of Lambert’s Saloon. Clay enjoyed merriment as much as he enjoyed hooch, but too much ... read more

After supper and talking, I went back to my room, and was annoyed to find that my car attendant Michael had not yet put it into night mode. Apparently I had left items on my chairs and the staff will not touch personal items. He explained this and converted it. As I said above, it was surprisingly comfortable -- right up until midnight, when I suddenly woke with another coughing fit, a really bad one. I soon realized that I simply couldn't lie down any longer; I couldn't breathe when I lay down. I spent the next hour alternately trying to wake Michael up without waking everyone in the car, and trying to figure out how to put my bed back into day mode. I couldn't do either. Finally, literally an hour since I had first ... read more

Piper and I have been hanging out at the hotel taking advantage of the indoor pool. Mark is with his buddies (Gary, Michael, Jorma, and Nick) at the NRA Whittington Center taking a 3 day course in the Barrett 50 cal Rifle. Piper and I decide to venture into Raton for lunch and find the Sweet Shop. In business since 1923, it is currently owned by Mike J. Pappas. His father opened the Sweet Shop in 1923. In the gift shop I see a book entitled, "Raton - History, Mystery and More." I enjoy the bits I read standing there and decide to purchase the book. It is written by Mike J. Pappas. When I pay for the book the clerk asks me if I would like the author to sign it. Turns out, Mr. Pappas ... read more

The drive from Texas to Raton, NM is incredible. Piper thinks that a mountain out the window looks like a volcano...turns out she's right. It's Mt. Capulin. There aren't a lot of places to stay in Raton, we are at the Holiday Inn Express. When I check in, they let me know there is a complimentary dinner for guests every night - potato soup and chili dogs tonight - and hot breakfast every morning. Cool! When I walk the dogs, housekeeping gets on their radios and soon I have a crowd on the patio admiring the dogs. Daily, they'd meet us on the patio after breakfast to visit with us. ... read more

Oklahoma City to Raton, NM. We are still on I-40 West. Today is a great travel day! Lots to see. Gigantic windmills courtesy of the Oklahoma Wind Energy Center dot the landscape. They look like something out of a sci-fi movie. We also see one of the real buildings that the animators creating the movie, CARS used in the film. In CARS it was the custom paint shop of one of the characters. Lots of tiny derricks also dot the landscape, along with windmills straight out of Wizard of Oz. Managed to get a shot of the Welcome to Texas sign. Fascinated by the crops and the irrigation. Piper points out that the crops are planted in gigantic circles so the circular path of the irrigation system can effectively water all the growing plants. The ... read more

Today is our daughter’s birthday and we miss her quite a bit. Left hotel at 7:30 am and stopped in (the other) Las Vegas (New Mexico) and loved the ambience. What a great town, and so rich in history! Arrived in Santa Fe just before lunch and walked around in the beautiful sunshine blue sky day, We managed to park right in the hub of Old Town and walked so much we needed lunch What a fabulous lunch we had. Opps….. is our passion for food coming though? Decided to skip Albuquerque and spend the time in Santa Fe. Stopped at the Cadillac Ranch just west of Amarillo just before sundown. Got some interesting pictures. Off to supper at the Big Texan Steakhouse Restaurant and what a selection to choose from!!! Disappointed that they were out ... read more
