Days 7 & 8. Early start yesterday for the long drive to Lincoln in New Hampshire, couple of stops on route until we hit the Kancamagus highway, supposedly one of the most scenic roads in New Hamshire, which we have to agree with, especially with the fall colours. Many stopping points & pull in, so many photo's! Hotel not as good as the previous one (think we were rather spoilt there). Another early start today to catch the 8.15 steam train on the cog railway to the top of Mount Washington. It takes an hour to be pushed up to the top, where the temperature was -5. Had an hour at the top & then came back down on the diesel train as it was too cold for the steam engine to stay up there. This afternoon ... read more

I am happy to report that we have had a successful vacation and still have a day left to ski. We met the conditions for a successful vacation yesterday when Dave completely tired me out. There we were, skiing at The Great Glen Nordic Center - home to 45 km of groomed trails. We had skied most of the trails - though I don't think close to 45 kms - and there were two trails left. Thumper and Peacemaker. I was defeated by Thumper. I could have done it I am sure, but was really too tired to think it was a good idea. As it was, it took most of what I had left to ski back to the Nordic Center. Thank goodness it was Thumper that did me in and not Fuzzbottom or Hairball. ... read more

We are a couple of days into our first ever ski trip to New Hampshire and wanted to give you all an update on how it is going. Even though it is cold here - minus zero overnight and between 9 and 16 during the day, it does feel slightly balmy coated to the Quad Cities. And we have been lucky enough to either have no wind or to be able to ski in the woods and get out of the wind. The forecast for the week does warm up into the high teens and mid twenties, so we at looking forward to that. Our plan is to cross country ski, do at least one day of snow boarding and do some fat tire biking. We are waiting for the warmer weather to do anything but ... read more

Geo: 44.0456, -71.6706Today we were going to the White Mountain National Forest and the night before during dinner the waitress suggested driving the Kancamagus Highway. Our first call was to the visitor centre to pick up guides and maps. As there was warning of storms and even flash floods we opted to buy some rather retching rain ponchos. We set off on the highway stopping off for a quick trail along the Pemigwasset River. This was set within large fir trees and was very pretty. On the way we stopped at some scenic overlooks but they were hampered by low clouds. We persevered and stopped at Lily Pond where we had been told we may see a moose although we heard rustling in trees, nothing materialised. Our next stop was the Sabbaday Falls which was a short hike ... read more
