Our first day
My new ski stuff is working great We are a couple of days into our first ever ski trip to New Hampshire and wanted to give you all an update on how it is going.
Even though it is cold here - minus zero overnight and between 9 and 16 during the day, it does feel slightly balmy coated to the Quad Cities. And we have been lucky enough to either have no wind or to be able to ski in the woods and get out of the wind. The forecast for the week does warm up into the high teens and mid twenties, so we at looking forward to that. Our plan is to cross country ski, do at least one day of snow boarding and do some fat tire biking. We are waiting for the warmer weather to do anything but cross country ski though .... True to form, we have been toasty warm the past two days cross country skiing. Yesterday we skied the Bretton Woods resort at Mount Washington. Being the first day out, we took it easy, and Dave only let me ski about 3 hours and 15 kms. We had to rush back to the condo to get cleaned up to
The Ski Lodge at Bretton Woods
Very nice cross country ski center go to the Johnny Cash tribute concert in Plymouth at the Flying Monkey. We had an amazing time - had a beer at the Lucky Dog Tavern before we went and had dinner at the Flying Monkey. We chatted with some of our fellow concert goers, and met our first ever lumberjack team. We did not pick up any lumber jacking tips though ... And Dave did not get to tell his story of chopping the tree in our front yard down this summer. The Johnny Cash singer looked and sounded almost exactly like Johnny Cash ... Unfortunately, we did not catch any of the stuffed flying monkeys. Sunday we skied at Jackson, New Hampshire. They have about 150 KMs of trails, we probably skied between 15 and 20 KMs. We skied along the Ellis River and through some of the covered bridges they have here. Lots of skiers out today and many of them faster than us. It seems like the college ski teams like this trail system, and boy are they fast. And they can skate ski too. Every time I try and skate ski, I fall. Maybe a lesson this week, and then I would be faster
Look at that snow plow
Dave was impressed with my bent knees than Dave. That is a tempting thought. Monday we skied at Bear Notch. Great trails, great snow at a rustic ski location. Kind of an old school location, you sign in at the front, get your ski map, and off you go. Lunch is soup and bread in the warming hut and then back out for more skiing. We skied the intermediate hills and then the easy scenic routes along the river and through the woods. Reading the amp was a bit of challenge, but we eventually found the lodge again in time to go home. Best of all, it snowed all day long. So, it was cold on Tuesday. High was about 5 today, warming up from a minus 3. We skied today at a National Park on the recommendation of some folks we talked to yesterday. The trail runs along a river to a waterfall. Best it is a good mountain bike trail and an awesome kayaking River in the summer. Tough ski trail though .. Almost all uphill, no grooming, and popular with the snowshoe crowd. Dave ended breaking trail for 7 miles. We made it almost all the way to the waterfall before we decided we
We got the camera timer to work!
Near the end of the first day skiing and we are still smiling had hiked, jumped and forded enough streams. So after having skied all the way up, we skied all the way down. A great day that brought back lots of memories. Skiing up and down the hill, crawling up a tight hill when I couldn't get my skis to work right, skiing down a hill with an open water stream waiting for you to miss the turn, and all of it behind Dave out front breaking trail. We met lots of friendly people on the trail including the father of a plebe at the Naval Academy. Still talking trash about the Army Navy game ... Sigh. Tomorrow we have to figure out what kind of skiing we are going to do and where. Planning on meeting an old Army buddy of Dave's tomorrow night for dinner. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Bill & Kathi Hagan

Awestruck & Annoyed
Kathi would be in the former set; Bill, the latter. She looked at your pix and story and gushed about how doing something like that would be “so wonderful,” etc. I think all of you are slightly insane. OTOH, if I injured myself early on, I could sit in the inn lounge, sip an appropriately "enhanced” hot drink and talk about my exploits on skis before my unfortunate spill. We will, btw, Dave & Jimmie, be that way later this year … as in the WARMER part of this year. In late June, at Swanzey (“Greater Keene”) for the national Moto Guzzi rally. Yes, I know, how could you miss that? :-) Bill’s mom — now 94 in a nursing home — still remembers with a smile, even in her sad dementia, cross-country skiing in the valley of the Upper Danube in the 1930’s. Sehr deutsch. Enjoy that trip! B&K
