After nearly 3 years of working at Cohn & Wolfe in Amsterdam…I made the choice to leave my job in June to see whether I could take a new direction in my career and head for the non-profit industry. First step: a trip back to a YMCA camp in New Hampshire where I had previously spent summer in 2003, 2005 and 2007. This time to work on a new area: the Environmental Education programme. This summer the camp was also “Going Green”, quite the challenge with around 350 new campers staying every 2 weeks as well as over 100 staff (just imagine the amount of food & waste that gets generated…). Indeed, quite a change from the office environment, but just the challenge I was looking for. So after the goodbyes at the office and ... read more

so this isn't a new place i traveled to. nothing about this is new. this entry is about the end of a chapter of my life. for 11 years i have gone to Camp Calumet Lutheran for boys and girls in Freedom, NH. i've been a camper, a trainee, and a counselor. camp is a place that has changed my life and has meant more to me than any country in the world ever could. i left on saturday and won't be returning next summer. i don't know how i can put my eleven years of experience into words, but i'm going to try here. camp is love. camp is a place where i found myself. where i learned it was okay to act like a child (in fact, it's encouraged). camp is a place of ... read more

So, finally my first entry after being back here at camp in New Hampshire for the third year! Leaving the Netherlands in the early hours of a Sunday morning, I slept through most of my journey to New York. In New York I had a few hours at the airport, which I spent trying to find my way around JFK airport, even the staff wasn't always able to tell me where my terminal or gate was... No wonder, when I saw my propeller plane, operated by "Freedom Airlines" - it was tiny and only had about 9 rows. Unlike the air-conditioned flight I just got off, this plane was boiling hot and very noisy. The air hostess was on her first day at work, so she was reading things of a sheet, and her supervisor ... read more

It's funny that we tend to appreciate where we are more, when we know we are leaving, or have left and come back. I've spent my last few days in NH trying to visit those spots and see those sights that have come to be my favorites, or that have been 'spots of refuge' for me in the last 2 years. So, yes.... I know this incredible tree is dead, but there is something beautiful in a dead tree. You can see all the detail that the leaves or flowers have been hiding for so many years. Enjoy the grand summer that New England offers. Now, taking off across land and much water towards a New Zealand destination, I realize that because of a time change, Saturday, July 8th will not exist for me...crazy. eh, who ... read more

Howdy everyone, What a strange thought that my 10 weeks here at camp are over as of tomorrow!!! It's been a great summer again, we've had great weather, great campers, and after all the sicknesses at the barn we were left with 7 great horses too! For the last week I was a counselor in Cabin Z. With a few counselors having to leave early for college they were short so I volunteered. It was a big change from the last time, when I had Cabin S (some of the youngest campers) to move into the Senior division, with some of the oldest campers. It was a great experience and I had a lot of fun getting to know this other side of camp and meeting the girls. I think it was tough on them to ... read more

Howdy everyone!! Haven't written for a long time but I will update you all on my camp lifestyle and routine. There really isn't a big change to what we do every week you see, apart from special days but I'll get to that later. And we share the computer between around 50 staff members so I don't have a lot of time to write either! Staff week was quiet, just training sessions, not too many new things but a good opportunity to get to know the rest of the staff. My parents also managed to pay me a visit and check out this camp that I have been raving about for so long. And since the kids hadn't arrived I was able to show them all of camp and we even took a little trip to ... read more
