Today we headed in the wrong direction (again!) so that we could visit the Mojave Desert and then head on up to Las Vegas for a few days before concluding our journey through middle America on Route 66. After taking a few photos this morning in downtown Barstow, we drove east along I-40 back to the entrance to the Mojave Desert National Preserve. We drove in the Kelbaker Road towards the Kelso Depot Visitor Centre making a stop at the Kelso Dunes along the way. These are huge sand dunes in the middle of the desert that are made by the wind blowing sand from Soda Lake, a dry lake, near Zzyzx. The sand laden winds hit the Granite Mountains and dump the sand in front of them thereby creating the massive sand dunes. You can ... read more

Went for usual walk. Completed log entries etc. and packed for our Las Vegas trip. Left at 11.00 and went to Vasanthi's place. AJ, Nanu, Shanthi, Aunty and Vasanthi were all in the kitchen cooking up special receipes for Father's Day. We had frittatas, freshly baked biscuit and crepes. Then it was gift time. All father's got gifts including R. After lunch Sri went and got a big car for our trip. Left home at 2.40 and was in Vegas by 6.40pm. Checked in at the Bellagio. We got a nice room with a wonderful view of the fountains. R was very hungry so went down and ate at a cafe in Bellagio and then went back to our room to change. Did a tour of the hotel Bellagio and then decided to do a tour ... read more

Day 69……09/06/2012 There is a weather phenomenon here on the California coast, and it’s called the “June gloom” and it is exactly how it sounds, gloomy misty weather. Well that is what it is like this morning, after weeks of clear blue skies, the one day that we needed sunshine for our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, the weather’s naff. The forecast is for it to be sunny in Los Angeles which is where we plan to go today, just not here yet. I suppose that we really should not be so ungrateful, seeing what beautiful weather we have been having and besides it could be much worse, we could be riding in England and by now would probably have drowned. A ten minute ride and we were at the sea, and although the views ... read more

Carla: Since the last blog we’ve packed quite a bit in! Feeling a little weary now but the RV (motorhome / campervan thingy) takes the strain rather well. We started in Anaheim, CA on Sunday 3rd June (our second Sunday 3rd June after crossing the dateline) and spent 3 days there relaxing, being annoyed by the unsustainability of some Americans’ lifestyles and marvelling at the horrendous food and such gargantuan portions. We visited Disneyland on Tuesday and on Wednesday we guiltily scurried to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana for something a bit more educational. On Thursday we drove through the Mohave Desert towards Arizona and Friday, Saturday and Sunday were spent at the Grand Canyon. (Aching calves aside it was one of my trip highlights so far). Being in a National Park at the ... read more

We rented a van head off to Vegas for Ivan's bachelor party. It was myself, Ivan, Chino, Assman and Richie. We had the smart idea of downing a beer each before we left. 45 minutes later our bladders wanted to explode. After we made a restroom stop, we unanimously agreed to take a shot every 30mins instead. It was good and fun until we reached the hotel and crashed. Ivan was a champ, he drove the whole way. We stop for a buffet before checking in. It was delicious. It was an interesting weekend. Out of the blue Able and his brother showed up. It was a pleasant surprise. My uncle from Seattle was also in town and needed a place to hang out until his friends arrived. I felt burdened by asking Ivan if he ... read more

Day 1 We arrived in Vegas thinking we’d have to get our first taxi of the holiday from the airport to the strip. However, we found a shuttle bus that was slightly cheaper so we took the shuttle. Up until this point Oli was in the dark as to which hotels we were staying in but I could not keep the first hotel a secret any longer as I had to tell the bus driver where to drop us off. I had chosen our first night of the 6 to be in The Cosmopolitan. We arrived to a very grand registration desk with TV screens everywhere. We were given the option to upgrade our room to a 1 bedroom suite with living room and balcony with a view of the Bellagio fountains. We took the upgrade ... read more

As soon as we enter Nevada we are welcomed by the famous Joshua trees, stretching their arms to heaven in extasis, like Joshua once did. But despite this pious gesture Nevada has become the very spot where all that happens what was forbidden once by God: gambling, sexshows and a huge consumption of alcohol. So it is rather a gesture of despair the trees make, witnessing as they do a new Sodom and Gomorra in their desert. We find a campsite at the outskirts of Las Vegas. It is completely full. It looks like some people live in their motorhomes. They make a little garden around it with a fence and sculptures of angels, birds and other animals, pots with flowers, colourful lights and always the American flag, proudly planted near the entrance. When I ask ... read more

So Blaise gambeled all his money in Vegas. We had to leave him there. He lost his sunglasses. Sybil lost her wallet (again), and found it. Jovan lost his mp3, and found it. We got the car checked and were on our way to the Grand Canyon. We stopped at the Flinstone's Campground right before the Grand Canyon. It was a weeeeird but funny campground. The campground-owner instroduced us to his crew and his 'homeboy' Nick. And invited us to join them at their Flinstone-theme-park.... read more
