Looking back, many of our trips to Vegas in the 90s and early 2000s were in December, to join my family for a few days. We almost always stayed downtown, since it was my Mom's preference, and the rooms were comped or very inexpensive. We met up every morning for breakfast, then went our separate ways, to gamble, play golf, or go to a show. Then, we would all meet up for dinner. My Mom would always claim to have won a jackpot and bought dinner. I don't think she won that often?
Here is the story:
We are having a great time here in Vegas. The best parts are seeing our dear friends here and sharing the time with our family. My Mom enjoys gambling here so much, as does one of my Uncles, who stays up all night playing blackjack and drinking a few beers. Sheri and I just meet them for meals, and generally go our own way during the day.
Today, we did some shopping and visited a few more people we know out at Caesar's. Then back for a famous shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate Casino, and an afternoon snooze or two. Actually,
we ended up at our favorite and only fast-food place, In N Out Burger. We saw our friends Spencer and Ben at Caesar's. And the Spring break crowds have arrived. But we did not buy anything. Maybe tomorrow, as Spencer is getting us his 60% plus 30% discount at Ted Baker.
My Uncle Sab (my Dad's youngest brother) is having a great time here to celebrate his 80th birthday. We gave him some lottery scratchers. He started scratching the tickets at the dinner table like a little kid. He is also so lucky that my Aunt Tak takes such good care of him. She is a real saint. And she is a good cook and an avid golfer too.
My Aunt Haruko is originally from Japan. So, she really enjoyed our adventures in her home country. She said she has never been to Tsukiji Fish Market!!!! And she did not know about Omotesando, the Rodeo Drive of Tokyo. I think she is going back for a visit sometime this year.
We met for dinner tonight and a last round of gambling. I am sure the big winner will buy dinner. Actually, my Mom was the big winner,
but I treated for dinner. Then I won $80 but had to buy a bag to carry home our spoils from shopping.
It is always sad to say our goodbyes when we depart. We notice how much my Mom and other relatives are slowing down. They say this is their last trip to Vegas, but I doubt it. As long as they can walk, they will come here to gamble. And we will meet them here for however long they can visit here. Viva Las Vegas for now.
Fast forward to 2024: Our trips will never be the same. Different, but not necessarily better or more fun. Having dear friends out in the suburbs makes this a more normal visit. We tend to stay off of the Strip and downtown. The TPC Summerlin area has everything we need, plus great food and many friends!
Life goes on!
