There was a major construction project going on at the Hoover Dam. A risk audit following 9/11 had shown the dam was a potential target because the main highway went right on top of it. There was a new bridge being built to bypass the dam. You can still go inside the dam on a tour, but the big generator rooms are now off-limits on this tour. The dam was one of the many projects during the "New Deal" that was designed to get the U.S. out of the Great Depression of the 1930's. It required lots of manpower and investment. Maybe the post 9/11 bypass bridge is the modern rendition of the "New Deal" in the 2008 economic crisis. A lot less manpower though. We went on the tour and continued on to the Grand ... read more

Happy Independence Day! We're on the road again…continuing south on I-15 toward Las Vegas. We will overnight on Lake Mead (appropriately named), the body of water created by Hoover Dam and which supplies Las Vegas and much of the southwest with electricity. At 10:15 pm we pulled into Lake Mead RV Resort after a visit through the heart of Las Vegas. Our route took us around the downtown area but one member of our party insisted she needed to see the famed Las Vegas strip. Parting ways with the maps, it was not difficult to identify our target. It was approaching sundown and the light level was just right to witness fully the crowds lining the streets and the lights lining the buildings. After a simply horrific night’s sleep, with left this beautiful desert campsite and headed south for the Hoover Dam. There was a security point that all vehicle needs to stop for, and because we have a car top carrier and cargo rack, they pulled us over for a search. The road leading to the dam drives right over the top of it. We parked and walked over to the dam and saw the Colorado River on our left meandering into the dam and two towers each with a gigantic clock. One read “Nevada Time” the other “Arizona Time”. I didn’t realize that the dam lied in two states. Another curious thing was the clocks both read the same time? Dave explained that Arizona does not observe daylight savings time.
