The plan today was to drive to the Absarokee Mountains, and Tim went through the directions with me to see some cool stuff. First off though I went for a run. When I got closer to central Billings the temperature display was showing 22 degrees F (-5 C), and it took a long while for my hands to warm up. I also coughed and spluttered at the start before settling down. Due to the cold I didn't think I was running very fast (couldn't feel my leg muscles properly), so I ran further to compensate. When I jogged passed the lake there were no pronghorns/antelopes to see, which was disappointing. When I got back Beck was ready to go, but we changed our plans to go to the Battle of the Little Bighorn or Custer's Last ... read more

We were woken by the sounds of Johhny Cash, as Joel quite rightly figured we should make the most of the day. The plan was to go cross country skiing at Red Lodge, and to do some sightseeing of the Beartooth Mountains. Beck was apprehensive about skiing, because she can't afford to hurt her hands/wrists with work, but she said she would have a go. We got together some extra snow gear from Becky and Aaron, and we were set. In Red Lodge it took us a little while to find a place that hired out skis, but when we did at $10 we couldn't go wrong. All of us got off to a slow start going up hill, and it was icy, but we soon got the hang of it, and it proved to be ... read more

I heard Tim get up, but I couldn't get myself out of bed. Then when I did get up to see Becky I just missed her drive out of the driveway, so I went back to bed. We finally got up around nine after a good sleep on a very comfortable bed, and not long after Joel got up to cook us some excellent omelettes. Joel is staying at his parents house for the week, so he can hang out with us as much as possible. After talking some more, Joel had to get ready and go to work, but his brother Aaron was back from work by now, so he entertained us. Aaron took us for a drive out to Pioneer, and then to the old neighbourhood where the road is sealed now. The house ... read more

We started The Ski Diaries 2006 by opting to take a secondary route versus the Interstate South of Cardston through wide open ranch country. The traffic was scarce but the herds of Black Angus, deer and antelope were prolific. The roads were clear and travel easy for the next 12 hours. We arrived in Big Sky, Montana a few hours after dark. Although it was too dark to figure out where the ski hill was actually located, instinctively Boyd pulled up to a 4 star hotel that was ideally situated right at the base of the mountain, had the best food and service and the largest indoor/outdoor hot tub overlooking the ski slopes. It was wonderful to have valet parking, bell service to take our ski gear to the room after such a long trip. The ... read more

It's September 26th...11pm. This is my last blog from Montana. Tomorrow morning I wake up at 5 am and bustle to the Bozeman airport. Sienna and I fly to Philadelphia at 8:15am. Everyone has been asking me how I feel: excited, nervous, scared... Somehow, I don't feel any of those things yet. The best word we came up with was "apprehensive" but even that is not quite right. Yeah, there's that small churning in my stomach...there's a million questions floating in my head. But always, it seems, with big life events, they just seem to happen. That's all. I'm not necessarily a bystander or an onlooker--I'm definitely part of the flow. But that's it. I just go with it. What can you do but let it happen? It's inevitable. This is the path I chose to ... read more

all of my worldly possesions were packed up this weekend and sent trucking with my father. i had way more stuff than i intended--and i even thought i didn't have that much stuff! sad. but that's our culture. ke garne? i have these small moments of clarity. it's like a cloudy day, but the sunshine breaks through occassionally for just a little bit. something i say will strike me and i'll realize my future, but then it is quickly gone and all seems normal again. i keep waiting for it to really sink in. my room feels utterly empty and i suddenly feel very lonesome for some reason. maybe that's why we have so much stuff--to forget that we have isolated ourselves as a race. i really feel like there's still a decent amount of stuff ... read more

So we're two weeks out from departure date. I think it actually sank in this weekend. I'm really doing this! Hard to believe! I still have a load of stuff to pack up, which really sucks because who wants to spend time packing when you should be out with friends enjoying life? But for the most part I'm feeling really ready to go. I wish the weather was nicer in Bozeman, but maybe that's just an encouragement to pack! Ha! I can't even begin to describe the emotions I'm going through right now! Where does one start? I'm leaving the country. Not just for a little stint, but for something that feels much more permanent...you know? Strange. But this is the path I chose, and I think it's a good one. I'll have an amazing time, ... read more
