Monday, August 15th 64 degrees and rainy at 9:15. Rained on and off all night. Some blue can be seen in the south and east. Great Falls Wal-mart parking lot. Mileage is 15095. Drove to the Charles Russell Museum a few blocks in a residential area from where we were. The museum has a large collection of Russell's paintings and is organized in five galleries by dates, which show the changes in his style from a young man until he died in 1926. Russell came to Montana from a wealthy St. Louis family and worked as a cow hand on several ranches in the Judith River Valley and other areas near Great Falls until he was famous enough to make his living as an artist. He was a great painter in watercolor and oils of cowboys, ... read more

Whitewater Rafting. Gathering at 5:45 AM we sign the necessary waivers and board vans for an hour and a half ride across the plains and into the mountains, crossing the Continental Divide at Rogers Pass. This is an excursion put on by Malmstrom AFB's Outdoor Recreation Dept which provides all the gear and guides. We begin donning our wetsuits, PFDs, helmets, etc and receive a very thorough safety briefing. We're told that the water is 58 degrees (the soakings we receive later feel a lot colder) but that doesn't stop some of the younger folks from taking a volunteer swim. Our first 7 miles is a smooth paddle as we learn how to sit on the side of the inflatable, jamming our feet into the space between the floor and sides as an anchor, and paddle ... read more

Hardin to Great Falls Departing relatively early we refueled and continued our trek north. Today the temp went from a cool overnight to an afternoon in the 90's. The pathway through the grazing lands, past the rock formations poking out of the turf, was wonderfully scenic. On several crests we saw wind farms windmills in their parked modality. In the distance were snow-crested mountains, the creators of the swollen rivers we continued to see. The fields also seemed soggy from recent rains. The open spaces were covered with what I'd call “chokeweed” except for areas obviously cleared for grazing cattle, sheep and horses. Rail transportation is also a very popular way to move product although we couldn't understand why several trains are parked side by side on the main line (union work rules?). Arriving at Malmstom ... read more

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LETA!! At breakfast this morning Barbara and I were finally able to stop worrying about spilling the beans about Leta's birthday presents that had been packed in our Rv by her children before we left Acworth. Remember the problem with Leta and Shelby's Rv, well this morning all of those problems got resolved, and we head out for Shelby, Mt., knowing that we will probably not make it because of the late start. We get to Great Falls, Mt. for our fuel stop early in the evening, and since they had excellent Rv parking, and not to mention it was Leta's birthday, we decided we had enough for today. We also wanted to be somewhere that we could take Leta out to dinner for her birthday. She had several choices of resturants around ... read more

Day 2 Out of Spokane later than I hoped. I had a little problem working my new sexy netbook . Spent a while working with tech support. Truth be known.. I could have just been an idiot. All is good now. So on the road, a quick stop for coffee and time to make some miles. I took I-90 over to the rest stop just inside Idaho to decide where to go. I decided to slab it to just past Missoula and pick up 200 heading east - northeast. This is where the fun starts. 200 is a wonderful two lane road in this stretch as it climbs the west side of the Continental Divide, the pine trees are in abundance, much like in the cascades as I cross over and drop down the east side ... read more

Welcome to the first edition of the Paulsen travels in the summer of 2009. I am a little slow getting started with the blog this year so will do some catchup with this first message. Our summer travels started in May when we traveled to Zihuatanejo, Mexico for our son Neil's wedding. Had a great 10 days of lying on the beach, enjoying the wonderful food and a beautiful wedding celebration. We came home and spent a hectic two weeks finishing up work items and getting ready for our summer trip to Montana and Washington. We loaded the camper and left Boulder City on June 24 heading north. We spent the first week visiting family and friends, doing some family history work and getting some kayaking in as well. I then spent a week in Great ... read more

... read more
