Roof Vent 1
Phil and Bryan putting on the roof vent. So, we've moved on to installing doors and floors, or I should say, 'floor'. The floor in the 1st floor is dyed, poured concrete, so it's already done, except for having the concrete pros come back and seal it....which will come when we're done painting down there! So, last week we prepped the subfloor in the great room and the upstairs hallway to lay down the fir flooring. We had to scrape all the dried drywall mud and other gunk that had collected on the subfloor and vaccum it well. This is how dirty/dusty it was - we have a big shop vac and we clogged a filter beyond cleaning, then got a new one, clogged it though we were able to clean it and then clogged it again at the end of installing the flooring. Lots and lots and lots of saw dust. Last Sat. (5/13) Bryan installed the doors upstairs (with the exception of the game/blanket closet in the great room who's door has not come in and our master bath door) because we needed to have them in before we started laying the floor. While he did that I painted the office. I painted it 'magic spell' which
Roof Vent 2
Phil and Bryan putting on the roof vent. on the paint chip looked like a subtle blue...but as Bryan so bluntly put it..."It's freakin' purple" and though I was only half way done at that point, I had to finish it so that whatever we put over will have a consistent color. So we've been searching for a new blue. We tried a tester of a 'true blue' but it's too UK bright blue - a little too elementary, Crayola blue. We both like the idea of blue - but finding the right hue is near impossible. I got another tester last night - "overall" by Ralph Lauren paints (at the good 'ol Home Depot) - it's a deeper, richer blue and I think it maybe our winner. Need to see it in daylight though so I'm looking forward to getting out there early tonight. I'm also excited to see how our second red teser looks for the master bath. We are deciding between 'red energy' and 'hunting coat red'. I think we pretty much decided that 'red energy' is too magenta and that we'll be going with hunting coat red but want to see it in the daylight as well. Ah, decisions, decisions.
Saturday after all
Sunset 1
We have the most amazing sunsets from our house.... the doors were in and the painting put away, we laid the first pieces of the wood floor. These don't use the special flooring nailer we had to rent - just get shot directly into the floor. Once that first row was down we called it a day, went to a BBQ at our friend's Dan & Syd's house (fun times and great food!) and then went with Todd and Nicole to see Broad Comedy - a local women's comedy troupe who write all their material. They are absolutely HILARIOUS. They started out here but this spring just had a big run in Boston - so big in fact that they hired a Boston troupe who performs their material. We went to the late show (10pm) and then all four of us were foggies and went home to bed! 😊
Sunday was the big day. We got up, ran around collecting all the things we needed to lay the floor - the rented nailer, nails, subfloor adhesive, yada, yada, yada... so we didn't really get started until Noon but we worked hard and it went pretty fast. I learned how to use the saw - and even got to
A Look down the Hall 1
This is a look down the hall from the great room toward our master bedroom. This is as Bryan was installing all the doors...it's amazing the difference doors make in defining spaces. the point where Bryan was trusting me to measure and make exact cuts...must say I got pretty good at it by the end of the night. Phil came out and joined us for a little while. He'd never seen wood floors installed and wanted to come learn a little about them. So, we worked until around 8pm when we took a break to help our friend John drop a car off for his dad and then dropped Duncan off at Betsy's, grabbed some Pita Pit and went back out to the house...arriving around 10 pm - and had to break into our house. Both Bryan and I had locked our house keys in the house. Luckily the door from the garage into the house doesn't have a dead bolt so we were able to pick it with a Smith's card. We rock and rolled until 2am. I had no idea it was that late then but I surely new the next morning! 😊 We almost finished and then Bryan and Phil went back Monday morning and finished. It looks great. Our next task will be staining and polyurethaning it...that's the adventure for this weekend.
We also spent time this
First boards
Bryan putting in the first boards....those that define the space for the stove...under it will be tile. week installing hardibacker (concrete board) in the ceiling of the master shower. It had to go in before the insulators can come back and spray insulation up there. And man, I can't wait until they do that! The past couple of days it's been in the 80's here and when we've gotten to the house in the evenings, it's been around 90 upstairs...yikes. So, the insulation will really help with that so we're psyched to have it all ready to put in.
Well, I think that's the update for now. We are planning on having a little fun next weekend (Memorial weekend) and holding our first bonfire/BBQ at the new house. Though it won't be done, we're going to have some friends out anyway and light a fire, roast some weenies and slay a brew or two. We're going to have everyone bring sleeping bags, etc and stay the night...we're excited about that. Alright, once the floor is stained, I'll send pictures of that!
