Geo: 38.6276, -90.199Day 11 It was 55° when we departed Liscombe, Nova Scotia this morning. Still raining. Full rain regalia was in order. Allison said this was a typical day for her in Newfoundland in spring and fall. We didn't visit Newfoundland, although it's one of the Atlantic Provinces. So she showed us a video called "Canada over the Edge" about her home Province. The island contains the eastern most point of North America (exception for the Aleutian Islands in Alaska). “Next stop as you head east: Ireland.” It's also where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless transmission.Allison handed out a list of our emails, which we all submitted voluntarily yesterday so we can stay in touch. I will send everyone our group photo from the covered bridge in New Brunswick.Speaking of group photos, Allison handed ... read more

The story continues with our flight home from Alaska on United Airlines. The plane was packed and everyone really wanted to try to sleep, but that we pretty difficult. Unfrotunately the most generous description of service would be “apathetic”. They really seemed to be going through the motions but with no “spirit” or “interest in us”. Anyway, we did the best we could to get a little sleep and the plane arrived in Denver ahead of schedule (6:30 AM Mountain Time – 4:30 in Anchorage). Our arrival gate was B26 and our departing flight left from B84, so this time we trudged through a large part of B terminal in Denver (versus our experience 2 weeks before). Anyway, the four of us got to the other end of the terminal and we got a quick hot ... read more

Forgot to remember to allow for time change so up earlier than necessary. Oh well! Great dinner at Josh and Jackies last night, in bed before midnight and up at 7:30. Going to do late breakfast or early lunch then head to Kansas for tonight's stay. Only about 7-8 hours riding today since after Salina KS there isn't much interesting to hit in KS except maybe the worlds largest ball of twine. ... read more

MEMPHIS, SCOTLAND COUNTY, MISSOURI Jesse Gunnels, the man who raised Grampa Bill Wakefield’s mother and chased the rebels out of Scotland County farmed only a few miles from the land where Glen Oliver’s dad was raised. Glen married Carolyn Sylvester and they raised a noisy family together. A few years after Glen went up the flume on Christmas Day of 1945 Carolyn married Grampa Bill. A few miles to the north of the Oliver farm in Memphis, just over the Iowa line, James Daniel Hanson was born at about the same time that Grampa Bill was born in Pantano. Hanson was this writer’s other grampa. Neighbors living not too distant to the east of the Oliver farm were the family that Tom Horn, the famous, mule skinner, scout, man hunter, liar, drunkard, and killer grew up ... read more

Here we go on another fun vacation. It has been 16 months since our last cruise (Australia/New Zealand), and we have developed a bad case of itchy-foot syndrome. This trip will be another “first time experience” for us – going on a cruise we’ve actually done before; to Alaska. Our previous Alaskan Cruise was 11 years ago so we are looking forward to seeing it again, but we are also doing new things and this certainly will not be a re-run of our earlier trip. The first week of this vacation will be a land-based exploration of the Canadian Rockies (where we have wanted to visit for a long time), followed by a week cruising the Inside Passage from Vancouver to Anchorage Alaska. We will be joined on the cruise portion by Janet’s sister Kathy Siebert ... read more

Road trips are first and foremost about road food—thus, our first stop was 120 miles west of Columbus in Richmond, Ind. Richmond is the home of Earlham College, but more importantly of Square Donuts of Richmond! It is Michael’s birthday today and to celebrate we stopped off at his favorite donut place while he was at Earlham. (Sorry Michael, these do not mail well.) Check out these tasty little bricks of flour, fat, and sugar—delicious. (Note: They are low sodium!) Of course, you also have to have your own road food along. We made a stop at Trader Joe’s before departing and, well, take a look. How on earth did we manage to walk out of there without a single vegetable or fruit? At least we hit some of the basic food groups—chocolate, nuts, cookies…opps, forgot ... read more

I don't know about everyone else but the day before I leave on a trip seems to be such a hectic almost frantic day. My day today consists of finishing up work commitments, making home and pet arrangements for while I'm gone, finishing packing, and oh, helping my daughter move. I have been praying for God's peace and strength for my own situation, and this morning I've prayed for each of the team by name. That your day today would be more peaceful than stressful, that your travels would be smooth not interupted, and that when we arrive in PEI tomorrow that we will be ready for a week of fun, fellowship, hard work and surprises. Godspeed - see you in Canada!... read more

Oh my goodness life is so filled with unexpected adventures. So glad to be back blogging about some of these humbling, fun filled, real life experiences with those who may take an interest in reading this blog. Day one, our adventure begins as Sisters in Christ, (Pam & I) embark on what at the time appears to be no different than any planned travels to and from a determined destination. My heart is connected to helping and supporting my dearest friend in doing some much needed upgrades on a family Lake House located at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. All knowing that the house has not really had TLC for close to 20 years or so. Each of us are not quit sure what exactly to expect upon arrival. A close relative has been ... read more

What a great day. St. Louis is a nice city. I didn't know much about it. We saw as much as we could in one day. Whew. We are staying at the Residence Inn Downtown. It's a little better than average Marriott with two rooms and sleeps 6 with a kitchen. We didn't need the kitchen but we need the sleeping space. Free buffet breakfast and best of all a shuttle to anywhere in the city. How bout' that? The location of the hotel is good anyway but to not have to find parking is awesome. So..Our day started at the Gateway Arch. I bought tickets ... read more
