August 21 - September 12, 2006 St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia - Chebacco Lake, Essex, Mass. 18,351 miles to date 1,942 miles this leg Ah, September, this rarest and most treasured of months. When we were planning for this trip, friends and relatives across the country urged us to visit them in September. “It won’t be too hot or too cold, and the leaves will be starting to turn,” was the gist of their suggestions. But since we can only spend September in one spot, we chose New England. We crossed from New Brunswick into Maine on Aug. 24 and have meandered from that state’s coastal band through New Hampshire to Vermont and on to Massachusetts. We’re glad to be back in familiar territory—as I (Shelly) attended college in Massachusetts and explored pretty far and wide—and especially ... read more

BOSTON It took about 8 hours to get to Boston on the train. The hostel is above an Irish pub that has bands every night - so it is noisy. But if you are at the hostel you get in for free - so if you can't beat them join them. Really wanted to see the Red Sox whilst I'm here but I think they are away all week. Went to the 'Cheers' bar where the TV programe was based. Well Boston was fantastic probably my favorite place out of all of them I have visited so far. I didn't do that many 'touristy' things, although did the Freedom Trail - so know so much about American history - and how naughty us British were. Made friends with a Dutch lady and went out with her ... read more

I didn’t think I would be returning to America until after I was done with JET and my travels, meaning November 2007 (yikes!). Around June last year I was beginning to really miss home. I also had a special someone I wanted to visit back in Boston. What can I say….I caved. I was bound for the motherland. Maybe there is something in the water in Hiroshima left over from the a-bomb or something…because somehow I booked a flight not to California, but back to Boston to visit Misha (see HK and Philippines blogs), bringing the Southeast Asian romance to the Western Hemisphere. Lucky me with parents that love me, they flew out to meet me as well, and I have a bunch of friends now in Boston, so I got to see more than just ... read more

Reverse culture shock has been a regular visiter at my apartment this summer. In my opinion, culture shock (or reverse culture shock, for that matter), is not the surprise of first arriving to a place, but rather occurs six to eight weeks (give or take) after getting to a place. It's around this time when everything that was new and exciting and novel and quaint becomes reality. It's this point when you realize that this isn't somewhere you're visiting, it's somewhere you're living. The quaint and fascinating can become annoying, and the people with whom you were fascinated (or who were fascinated in you) become less fascinating (or fascinated). It's when you start to realize that you're all alone and perhaps that people don't understand you. It's a lonely time, and it sucks, to put it ... read more

Left Hartford on a Greyhound on Tuesday morning for Boston. Met up with our host Rich (Univ chemistry graduate) who picked us up in his Barbie and Ken style open top jeep. Had a drive around Boston in the evening and then went up to see the view from the prudential tower. Wednesday was spent walking around lots and exploring the shops a little. Went to Boston common, saw the Cheers bar and generally had a lovely day, but quite chilled out. Thursday was slightly more action packed. An early start at 7am to go whale watching for 4 hours meant we were quite tired but it was well worth it. After seeing humpback, minkie and finback whales (as well as a cheeky little seal) we wandered around the older part of Boston, Beacon Hill. Finished ... read more

Greetings everyone!!!! Thursday morning I left the house at 5:45 AM to be sure that I would not have any problems making my 8 AM flight. Arriving at AirTran at 6:00 AM, I checked the suitcase in curbside and headed for the security checkpoint carrying only my laptop and a muffin. By 6:05 I was thru security and at the gate eating a muffin, drinking a coffee and reading the paper. I guess flying to Boston is different than flying from London !!!!! Speaking of the whaling capital.....back in the 1800's, a good portion of the world's whaling fleet sailed from New Bedford, Mass. Think Moby Dick, the Seaman's Bethel and precious whale oil. It was all great until some guy discovered oil in the hills of Pennsylvania and ruined it for the whaling folks. Still, ... read more

Provincetown, MA is the "gay & lesbian" American Dream. It is white picket fences. Fresh cut grass. Beautiful flowers. A small town village atmosphere. Friendly locals and tourists. The corner grocery shops. The town bakeries. Kids playing in their yards. People walking their dogs. Locals and visitors riding bikes. People flying kites. People fishing. Kayaking. Canoeing. Lounging lazaliy in a boat. Sunning on a beach. Having lunch on the pier. Yes. Provincetown is like the gay suburbs -- however -- it is a suberb atmosphere with a "wilder" side. Provincetown is loaded with gay & lesbian nightclubs, cafes, restaurants, shops, drag shows, cinemas, museums, art galleries and host numerous special events throughout the year including Carnaval in August, Holly Folly in December, Family Gay Week in July, Women's Week in October and many, many others. This is the 9th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 SAT 12AUG06 Saturday was one of the better days in my life. You ever had one of those days where it starts out good and just keeps getting better and better? So I had stayed up late Friday night plotting the points of interest in my GPS. I had had trouble following the route instructions that were in the program guide for the dealers loop, so I wanted to make sure I saw Waldens Pond (I had read the book for a college ethics class) and the North Bridge along with finding Kellys HD for the free ... read more
