9/17/11 - Plymouth, MA & Plimoth Plantation 53 degrees this morning. Went to Plymouth Rock and the town of Plymouth. We all, Shelby, Aleta, Jack, & Barbara; had lunch at the wharf - Cabby Shack. Ordered pizza. Later we took a tour to the Plimoth Plantation. Asked about the difference in spellings and was told that during those times there really were no rules on spelling and Plimoth was the favorite of some then. The tour was exciting to see the way people lived in the 17th century. All the villagers were in character of that time and were very interesting to talk with as they conveyed no knowledge of times since the times in which they lived. Jack cooked stuffed bell peppers, Aleta's lima beans, and biscuits for supper.... read more

"To travel is to possess the world".
Burton Holmes A summary of the past few weeks on Cape Cod--- It was a dark and stormy night on Cape Cod…… the wind was blowing and howling, gusting 35 to 50 miles per hour. As we looked out the front window we wondered if trees would fall and we will end up without power in our charming Cape Cod rental. The rain had not started coming down yet but was due any moment. In our short time on Cape Cod we have realized this is a very windy part of our country, especially in the fall. We have experienced wind, wind and more wind. Of course when you realize that you are surrounded by water, this is not hard to grasp. Wind farm energy would excel in this ... read more

Super quick update. I didn't get to to publish the last entry because we had a LBD just as I was finishing. An LBD is NOT fun. It's a Lost Bather Drill which means we have to leg it to a central place and drop off our kids and then run to the lake and wade around in the water until we find the drowning child or everyone has responded to the drill depending if it's a practice or not. We've had two so far and I've been pretty lucky. The first time I got there first and I got to stand on the side and shout out orders and the second time we'd scheduled time up at the EDC and we get to stay up there unless it's a real emergency. So the kids have ... read more

So staff training has been and gone and so far I'm loving it. we live in these big tents with 5 other staff members in, for training we have been in teams and we have basically been the kids and tried out all the activities as well as doing more serious training. Everyone here is amazing and luckily we all seem to get along really well. We just all spend so much time in hysterics. While we're here we all have to pick a camp name so the kids don't find out our real names, for strange american legal reasons (the same ones where you have to ask whether you can help someone before treating them for first aid and the same one why our first aid trainer got SUED for breaking a child's ribs while ... read more

Monday, 15 June (Plymouth & Cape Cod): We drove the 15 or so miles to Plymouth, after a rather long trip to get our morning coffee since the KOA store doesn’t open until 8am. Parking in one of the free parking lots near the ocean, we were surprised again at how desolate the place seemed. Apparently, this time it was due mostly to the early hour and chilly weather (a high of 62 I think), because by 11am things had picked up people-wise. We only peeked at and took photos of the Mayflower II, since we’d toured it before with the girls way back when, then went to see Plymouth (or Plimoth) Rock. Plymouth Rock is actually just a medium sized stone with 1620 chiseled into it and no real evidence exists that it was the ... read more

Today we went to the town of Plymouth to see the sights. Since Plymouth was spelled several ways in the 1600's, it was decided that the Plimouth Plantation Museum would be spelled with an "i" to distinguish it from the town that has a "y". First, at the museum, there was a short introductory film. Then we walked back outside (a beautiful day) and down a path into the woods. At a corner, we passed a circle of large stones with another stone in the middle. Rich wondered at its significance. Then we rounded the corner and saw a compound of a Wampanoag family. There were several buildings and shelters, and several Native People in their 1600's clothing going about their daily business. We went inside a short longhouse made with thick poplar bark. There was ... read more
