I love fall in New England. Every day I look outside my apartment window at the bright yellow tree less than a yard away, and remind myself just how few places get foliage like this. It’s still bright late in the month, a small sign of one of the best foliage seasons in years. Today dawned bright and warm, creating the irresistible desire to hike. Local foliage was still at peak, so I wanted something close. I went to the popular Noanet Reservation less than twenty miles from Boston. Noanet lies within Dover. It’s one of those wealthy communities where everything wants to look like a horse farm. No tract housing here! The town has an extensive network of conservation land, of which Noanet forms a centerpiece. Once off the main highway everything became twisty, slow, ... read more

Leslie here: I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I recognize how exhausting it can be to watch other people pack and move your stuff but how about the rest of us coming up with entertaining photos for these blogs? Totally intense! I also would like to comment on the fact that Mom and Dad seem to have spent a good amount of time in their hotel, which I whole-heartedly approve of, since I "man" a hotel bar. But have they developed a relationship with their hotel bartender? It can really enhance the hotel experience to get to know the person at the helm of the ship, as it were. And it's a great way to spread awareness of the cocktail I named after Mom, the "Lois-tini". It's a martini glass full of chilled ... read more

So here is what's happening: The most stressful part of our move is over. The moving crew was here and burned through all our belongings in about a day and a half. After we fought a battle with ourselves over what to keep and what to throw away, we managed to bring (I estimate) 7-800 pounds of stuff to the town dump. Now all our belongings are in the moving van, except for a small fraction in our own mini-van. And we're still married!!!! ... read more

Hi all, Here's what's happening: For the passed couple of weeks we've been doing some packing of books, etc. and our walls are lined with boxes right now. We got rid of a bunch of stuff we don't need any more. The movers are sending their packing crew in the morning - not too early I hope. They'll pack dishes, glassware and whatever. Also, during the radon test last week the test showed a higher level of radon than is acceptable. So we have a guy coming to get rid of the radon. It will be interesting to see how that's done. He guarantees this to work for the life of the house. Then on Wednesday the crew that loads everything on the moving van will be here. And off they'll go to put the stuff ... read more

Leslie here. We've all been cautiously optimistic that this whole deal will actually go through. It seemed more concrete when the buyers signed the whatever-it-is a few days ago, but I am not surprised to find that there was another hoop or two to jump through. If all goes well, Mom and Dad will be homeless vagabonds in exactly one week. One last minute glitch -- the radon test came back positive, which means the reading was too high for the presence of radon, so we have to get the radon mitigation guy in here to get rid of it. This is fairly routine, I hear, so it won't delay the closing on Dec. 16. This is Lindsay. Radon mitigation is a cinch, so no worries. Mom and Dad will be toolin' on down to Dixie ... read more

Leslie and I have decided to keep a travel blog for Mom and Dad during their big moving adventure. Why don't they keep one? It's not for lack of encouragement on our part. Judging by the "little email blurb" reference in Mom's note, the reasons should be evident. Luckily, they have the two most caring children in the world in us (although, one more than the other) and we're only too happy to pick up this technological ball they've fumbled and run with it. So as Mom clicks "send" on her blurbs, we'll do everyone the favor of copying and pasting them into blogs. You're welcome. Hi all, Now that we have something concrete to tell you, we'll start our little email blurb - if you're ... read more
