Spent an enjoyable day seeing the sights in sunny Boston. I think I have finally began my warm weather holiday! After a few days of warm weather in L.A, I have pretty much had cool/cold weather since so it was good to be back in t-shirt weather and sweating 😊
Didn't leave the hotel until after 10am and made my way down to the Faneuil Hall and bought myself a ticket for a trolley car hop-on hop-off tour. Boston is quite spread out and I thought jumping on a tour would allow me to get around. My first stop would be the U.S.S Constitution which is across the bridge and definitely a little too far to walk in this heat. The Constitution is an old navy sail ship and was undefeated in battle. It is still sea worthy and they were going to fire a 20 round cannon salute on Memorial Day Monday. I am still amazed how these types of ships had so much rope which controlled and held everything in place!
From the Constitution, I followed the Freedom Trail up to Bunker Hill and along the way I got to see the peaceful historic neighbourhood streets of
the North Side. Seems like a decent place to live as it was quiet, neat and still only a short trip to downtown. Bunker Hill is actually not the site of the actual battle but the monument is located atop the hill. It is a tall stone monument and can actually be seen at quite a distance away - kind of like a beacon.
I hopped back on the trolley and continued the tour around the districts of Boston, seeing sights like TD Garden (home of the Celtics), Boston Commons and Public Gardens, original Cheers pub, Newbury Street, Copley Square and Prudential Center, Fenway baseball stadium before getting to the MIT campus. I hopped off here as I wanted to jump on the subway for the trip out to Harvard. I thought Harvard would be quiet as it was a Sunday of a long weekend but the area was filled with tourists and student residents. Harvard University is probably the most well known learning institute in the world. There was actually a queue to take a photo with the statue of John Harvard. I couldn't resist and ended up buying a Harvard cap and t-shirt. After walking around and
checking out the university grounds I jumped back on the Red Line subway to downtown.
Since it was such a nice sunny day, I decided to go check out Boston Commons and Public Gardens which are 2 large park areas right in downtown. Not as big as NYC Central Park but impressive nevertheless. There were plenty of people out and about enjoying the warm weather and I joined them. Bought a dirty stand hot dog, found a spot along the pond in the Public Garden and relaxed for quite a bit of time. I did some people watching which was quite enjoyable as there was such a broad spectrum of the Boston population present here today.
My next stop was to walk over to Chinatown which was larger than I expected. There were quite a few Vietnamese restaurants and I continued my testing of Pho. Went to a large and busy place called Pho Hoa and got a large bowl and it was pretty good. I would hate to attempt to finish the extra large bowl!
As the sun was setting I went for a walk out to the North End which like the Little Italy of
Boston and it was very big and crowded. Some of the restaurants had queues along the footpath and there was a pastry bakery which had a mammoth line. Norton Street in Sydney is supposed to be the equivalent of a Little Italy but it's rather tiny compared to this!!
