Although it took major league baseball 70 years to finally recognize Lou Gehrig, today July 4 2009 they finally did it. Lou Gehrig the Yankee ball player that this disease was named after was 38 when he was diagnosed in 1939. Less than two years after his retirement he was dead. http://espn.go.com/mlb/flash/gehrigletters Fifteen MLB teams from across the country participated in what they called an informational day. Karen and I were invited to participate with a number of other PALS in the MLB 4ALS tribute at Fenway Park in Boston. The sun cooperated and it was finally warm and clear. We had one of the best Saturdays we’d experienced in over a month. The Red Sox invited us down on to the playing field for the pre game ceremony while Kurt Schilling read Gehrig’s “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech. Sylvan with Steve and Sue the best seats in the house. We were invited to watch the game from Red Sox owner John Henry’s private box. (Mr. Henry is away on his Honeymoon) What a treat, free drinks and great food served by “Dave” mister Henry’s personal butler. This was such a memorable day for Karen and myself. We’ll always cherish the thoughts of this day.
