Photos from 10-14-13 - on the way to Deer Isle Once again referring back to the Our House gallery, photos 18 & 19 were taken outside our basement entrance while we waited to leave for Deer Isle. When Jim mentioned Deer Isle as his choice for Jakub’s suggestion, my mind raced with many questions, suggestions, and the possibility of going to Stubdude’s a day early. No, that would be no good. There’s noway I’d want to leave this group experience before I had to. Coincidence or whatever, Stubby’s first name is Jim, ... read more

Deer Isle, Maine July 23 to August 1, 2010 Thanks to our good friends Byrd and Carl we returned for a second year to beautiful Deer Isle. We enjoyed a week of perfect Maine weather, sunny, warm with low humidity. Highlights included a day trip to Schoodic Peninsula, a less traveled part of Acadia National Park, trips to Stonington, the spectacular house and garden tour in Castine to benefit the historical society, a performance of Flash in the Pan the local steel band, dinners with our good friends Kurt and Isobel who live in the area and just rest and relaxation. It has to be one of the most picture perfect places with every turn of the road postcard material. Maybe next summer we will be lucky enough to return for a third summer. ... read more

Nervous Nellie’s A short ride from the center of Deer Isle down Sunshine Road is an interesting emporium and sculptor park called Nervous Nellie’s Jams & Jellies, owned by Anne and Peter Beerit. It is located on an old farmstead, surrounded by gardens and set on the edge of the woods next to an old orchard. Nervous Nellie’s produces numerous small batch jellies and jams produced in the jelly kitchen on site. Peter Beerit’s folk art sculptures populate several acres of the grounds and surround the kitchen and sales cottage. Peter uses discarded items, junk and found objects to create whimsical sculptures and living spaces. The 10-foot tall pink flamingo and a village of the absurd welcome you as you enter the store. A pleasant café with an outside deck is attached to the store and ... read more

August 8,2009 - This week our friend Byrd invited Karen and I to stay with her at a house in Deer Isle, Maine that she had rented for the week. This was a great opportunity for us, as we had never visited this part of Maine before. Deer Isle is on one of those great peninsulas that stretch out to sea for miles from US 1. They're part of Maine’s 3400+ miles of coastline that’s connected by bridges, causeways and boats. To get here, you cross this rickety old suspension bridge that crosses Eggemoggin Reach. Deer Isle has certainly earned it’s name. Deer are everywhere, one hangs out near our house eating the hosta and flowers the owners have planted in the front yard. The entire peninsula is a collection of some of the worst roads ... read more
