Cumberland Falls !
This was an impressive site ! Loud , Mighty , and Rageing ! 68 feet in height , 125 feet in width , and moving 3,600 cubic feet of water per SECOND ! I spent two years in this area living in Somerset Kentucky , just off Lake Cumberland . While living there i was taken to these falls in lake Cumberland State park . I had never been to these falls before , inspite of the fact that my father grew up in the hills of this state ,and i spent many a summer as a child and young adult in Kentucky . When we turned onto the long winding road the lead back into the National state Park .... i noticed how ghost town like it looked along the way . Then in what seemed to be with the snap of a finger.... the scenery changed drasticaly ! The land looked richer and trees were bigger, huge matter of fact ! The forrest looked thicker and the moisture in the air more intense . Breaking into a large clearing ,crossing over a stone arched bridge , we crossed over into the falls area . The sound was a rage of echos from flowing waters , bouncing off the walls of the surrounding cliffs ! The falls are surrounded on one side by wooden railed walkways with a dirt floor path, that lead
Bridge Crossing !
This is a snap shot of the bridge that takes you into the falls area, crossing over the stream bed that the falls empty into ! you to different points of view . Massive roots of the giant trees are incrested within the ground .....displaying their years of exsistance . Cumberland Falls height is 68 feet , and has a crest of 125 feet ( wide) . Know as Little Niagra of the south , and the only place in North America where a moonbow appears ! These falls are in the center of Cumberland State Park and the surrounding land is know as the Daniel Boone National Forrest . Nesseled between McCreary and Whitney Counties . Discovered by Zachary green on an expedition in 1770. The Falls have a water flow of 3,600 cubic feet per second !! After being discovered by Zackery Green in 1770.... it was privatley held between the years of 1860 to 1930 . These falls recieve on average 700,000 vistors per year ! There is fantastic camping in the national Forrest and state park , i am not sure of the dollar amount as i lived in the area at the time of visit so i didnt need to camp to see this wounderful , spatacular site ! There is no charge that i know of to view these falls
Down Stream View !
This shot was taken futher down stream looking back towards the falls . Close to where the indians would have made camp ! ! There are restrooms , break areas and a wounderful gift shop displaying survineers of the past and present . Lots of history info can also be picked up at the welcome center located with the gift shop !
