Smoky Garden Fishing Lake Park, Goodland, KS Joan has a knack for finding campgrounds. I’m not sure how she does it exactly, but that’s her responsibility and she comes up with some, usually great, surprises. As we drove up Kansas 27 from Tribune towards Goodland, the landscape became pretty much what you think of in Kansas - flat, no trees, and covered with farms. As I scanned the horizon I didn’t see a single landmark except for an occasional patch of trees hiding a farmhouse and barn. As we followed Gladys (the LandCruiser’s GPS) I noticed that the dark blue line just sort of ended, changed to light blue, and took a sharp left turn. Geo: 39.3508, -101.71I then made a small detour into the business section of Goodland, Kansas. They have a very large painting of Van Gogh's sunflowers on a giant easel in a small park. The Big Easel Project began in 1996 when an artist and teacher in Canada, Cameron Cross, decided an enlarged hand painted reproduction of one of Vincent van Gogh's sunflower paintings, a public domain painting, resting on an enormous easel would make an appropriate landmark for the city that he lived in. He eventually created 7 of them and this is the only one in America. I had been there before, but no one was around to take my picture.
