On Saturday we had to leave the ship, that was okay; but, we had a whole day to kill since our flight was that night. We bought day passes to the Marriott at Waikiki Beach. We were so glad we did. They had 2 nice pools, changing areas and it was right across the street from the beach. Once there they also gave us a Cabana where we could spend the day. We walked on the beach, Pam got in the water, then we just relaxed. Around 5 we took a taxi to the airport, ate, then boarded our flight home. We arrived at RDU around 4:30 in the afternoon. Claire went to pick up a rental car for her trip back to the coast (remember Tom drove her to Raleigh because of his car problems) ... read more

After returning late from the luau,w e expected to spend an uneventful evening and get some rest before we got up early to head out to Kaua’I again; boy, were we wrong! First thing into the room, we discovered that housekeeping had taken Claire’s neck pillow out with the bedding. We could maybe see it as a simple mistake if it were white like the sheets, but it was a blue, odd-shaped pillow. A call to guest services was no help. Then, when Susan went to shower, she discovered that the room steward left us no wash clothes. In the middle of the night, we started smelling things and it was not nice… it smelled straight up like our room was part of the New York City sewer. Claire was having dreams about the smell. It ... read more

We woke up this morning and got off to an early start for a ship excursion in Kona on the Big Island. Kona does not have a deep-water port so we had to anchor out in the harbor and take a tender into a port for our excursion. They use some of the ship’s lifeboats for the tenders, so now, we can all say we’ve been in a lifeboat. Our excursion was an hour-long tour of the bay and harbor in a glass-bottom boat looking at the corals, fish, and other marine life of the island through crystal clear water. It was hot! After that excursion, the sisters did what we tend to do and made our own excursion around the island. Claire got a great deal on a rental car so off we went to ... read more

We started the morning EARLY because Pam somehow set her alarm for 4am. Thanks Pam. We all tried, but only Pam could go back to sleep. We all got up at 5:30 and headed to breakfast after getting ready. Afterwards we took a taxi to the airport to pick up our rental car in long term parking. Today’s journey was to Haleakala Volcano. The drive is the world’s highest elevation gain in the shortest distance. It didn’t seem like that. Compared to yesterday’s road, this was a super highway up to 10000 feet. Yes, it was curvy but the road was wide and smooth and you could see around the corners of the switchbacks. At one of the visitor’s centers, Claire heard a lady say “boy, I feel nauseous and I was even driving”. Claire replied ... read more

We woke up early, what a surprise (eye roll), and decided to go out on the deck and look at the stars. Not only did we see familiar stars, but we also saw shooting stars and the Milky Way. When the sun began to rise, we got dressed and headed to breakfast. We left early to pick up our rental car and tackle the Road to Hana. Susan drove and Claire navigated. The speed limit for the 55 miles we drove to get there varied between 15 and 20 mph. It was hard to even go the speed limit. Hairpin turns, one lane bridges, two lane roads the width of at most one lane, broken pavement, and blind curves were a real challenge. Believe it or not, they had “no passing” signs in places, really?!? It ... read more

Friday we all drove to Raleigh and stayed in a hotel so that we could catch an early flight. Tom drove Claire as he needed that car since his car had issues. He then had to drive home. We took an early morning shuttle to the airport for our long flight to Hawaii. (1 hour to Atlanta and 9 hours to Honolulu). We had changed 6 time zones and almost 60 degrees in temperature when we arrived. We got our car and headed out into TRAFFIC. It looked like rush hour at 3pm, give us Charlotte or Raleigh any day. We made it to our hotel, but had to figure out how to manipulate all the one-way streets. Oh, in our free hotel room, we had a $45 valet parking fee (our only choice) and a ... read more

4. We’re on our way. Our travel arrangements from hotel to ship all went to plan. Our chauffeur introduced himself as Nikolai and due to the fact that he must have been trained by the KGB in fast, evasive driving, got us to the terminal somewhat quicker than advertised. Being on the Elite loyalty level, we were whisked through check-in and security and were on board having lunch before 1pm. Sailaway was delayed by some three hours as not all the stores had arrived and loaded. Like there isn't already enough food to last a few days, but maybe it was the Captain's favourite chianti order. Talking of the captain (he's Italian, hence the chianti joke), we have seen him around the ship a couple of times already and going by his talks and broadcasts, he's ... read more

I got up at 2am. Although activities at Aulani start up fairly early in the day, they don't start up that early! I enjoy a bit of quiet time in the mornings, though, and get a chance to work on my puzzles. Joanna has been stirring around sunrise, so she and I have been sipping on our pineapple-orange-guava (POG) juice out on the balcony while watching the sunrise. We got a standard view but lucked out. Although we can see the air conditioning units off to one side of our balcony, we also see a bit of the gardens, the rolling hills, and the sunrise! At 7:30, I went down to Rainbow Reef. I was first in line. By the time they opened at 8am, there was quite a line behind me that was at least ... read more

Our family had an amazing time in Hawaii (the big island) this past December. We rented a car, explored the island, saw volcanoes, rode horses through valleys, swam with manta rays, and had a blast! At the end of our trip, we had a canceled flight and ended up stuck at a resort for a couple of nights just relaxing and swimming. It was a great (if unexpected) way to end our trip. Andrew and I decided it would be nice to have a vacation at a resort, a place to hang around, swim, and relax. This year, we have a lot of milestones. He and I are both turning 40 this year. We have our 15 year wedding anniversary. Also, Andrew's celebrating 10 years of sobriety. We decided to cancel other, smaller trips we had ... read more

I’m up at 1.15am for the second time in two days in the hope that this time the bus that‘s supposed to take me up Mount Haleakala won’t leave me behind. It’s a full load, and our guide introduces himself as Trevor. I appear to be one of the younger members of the party. The email that came with the booking confirmation included “you must be able to hike a 1/2 mile at elevation and over uneven surfaces”; a few of these guys seem to be struggling to even get up the steps into the bus. They all finally manage to get seated. We haven’t rolled away from the hotel yet, but some of them are now telling Trevor that they’re feeling a bit motion sick and asking him if he’s got any bags. I’m sensing ... read more
