Our first day in Hawaii was a resort day. I had worried a bit about how the kids would do with jet lag and figured a day to relax and nap wouldn't be a bad thing. Honestly, the laid-back day at our Outrigger Kona resort worked out great! Yesterday, we arrived at the airport at 7:15am Central time (3:15am Hawaii time). At our layover in Denver, we learned that United stopped doing the Hawaii pre-clear in the airport (that's where they check your vaccination documents and give you a bracelet so that you don't have to stand in the long clear line in Hawaii). So, when we landed in Hawaii at 4:15pm (8:15pm Central), we had to wait to be cleared. After that, we caught our shuttle to the car rental place and waited for our ... read more

Monday: Haleakala!! Well, after much mulling and checking of weather forecasts, we decided to go ahead and make this the day we drive up to the 10,000’ dormant volcano. We headed out around 9 am, and stopped at our usual whale spotting place where we did see some, and Megan and Andrew got to hike a bit. We stopped at Makawao’s famous bakery just into the foothills – it’s where the Haleakala bikers pass through from their starting point at 6500’ up the mountain (no longer allowed to leave from the Park). We counted over 100 bikers descending. A really cute bohemian town with lovely shops – but no time! We worried about the clouds, but they stayed mostly off, and while the crater was a bit covered in wispy clouds, we got some great views, ... read more

Friday: We reported on this day already, but didn't include photos - so did that today. Saturday: Merry Christmas! Last night we were simply too tired to do anything but crash, but of course we were up early as usual for Christmas Day. After recording the Hawaii Christmas song for our English relatives and breakfasts, Andrew organized most of us into a sort of Olympics – long jump, ball tossing, etc. It is going to be a quiet, unscheduled day. Mike had had a dream to walk from the coast to Goat Island, and Andrew was willing to try. They got about half-way and the water was up to Mike’s waist and Andrew’s neck. The surface was very uneven and the waves fierce, so we were glad they didn’t try to go the entire way! The ... read more

Dec 22 came early!! As we got up before 2:30 am naturally and turned off some of our 4 phone alarms! The kids and we were up and out by the planned 3 am, headed for Cleveland Hopkins. The Bruegger Bagels woke us up sufficiently to board the 6:10 plane bound for San Francisco. Megan and Jean sat in one row with a nicely small young woman in between. Andrew and David sat some rows behind with the cat lady (oh, dear, didn’t bring allergy pills on the plane!). No problems with that flight. Ate lunch of pizzas and omelette and then got on a 777 with an enormous first class section with the fold down bed-seats. But our seats were comfy enough – sitting all 4 in the center – and everyone amused themselves well ... read more

On our way to New Zealand we had quick stop over in Hawaii. It was actually cheaper to fly via Mauii and Honululu than flying straight from LA to Auckland. Someone recommended to stay at the Banana Bungalow Hostel in Mauii, so we thought we check it out. Best decision ever. The hostel was so chilled and for around 30$ a night all the day tours were included as well. We stayed in a 6 bed dorm, but we got the room all to ourselves for 5 days. Everyone from staff to other guest were super nice. They had a small back yard with a hot tub and a kitchen. Everyone hu g out in the evening over a few beers and we met a lot of very interesting, mainly surfer dudes from California, but also ... read more

Amazing sunset Mauii is one of the most beautiful places I have visited so far. We stayed at the Banana Bungalow Hostel for 5 days. One of the perks staying here was that they offered free tours with different activities. One of the days we joined a tour that was supposed to take us up the Haleakala, one of the biggest crater volcanos, that is now dormant. The plan was to hike through the crater, which would have been an 8h hike. Unfortunately due to the weather conditions that day it was not possible to do the hike. When we arrived at the visitor center the winds were very strong and due to the fog you were not able to see anything. Instead we went to a lavender farm, which was probably equally as exciting. Not ... read more

The rain has finally abated to a steady drizzle. We have had 7.92 inches of rain in 24 hours – the 2nd highest daily total in Hawaiian history. Who knew the sky could hold so much water? It should clear by evening, which is good because today marks the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor,, which will be commemorated with a parade through Waikiki. We start the day at Kona Coffee, home of the cheesy cheese croissant. The queue is enormous and daughter no 1 wants to try somewhere less busy but I will not be deterred from reaching my cheesy cheese croissant. Cheesy mission accomplished, we walk to the beach and daughter no 1 goes for a swim. I cannot be persuaded because 1) the waves are scarily big, 2) I read ... read more

Breakfast has not been properly thought through; it consists of Everything Bagels, topped with a thick coating of garlic and onion, and blueberry cream cheese. This morning daughter no 1 wants to go on a whale watching trip. On an island with a reputation for big waves. With storms forecast and a wind advisory in place. I cannot be tempted to join her, so she sets off for the marina alone. I am, of course, right and pretty soon she texts to say all boat trips have been cancelled. So we agree to meet at the mall 2 miles away. She has the money belt containing all our cash, so walking is my only option. Instead of sending me a block up and along a street lined with shops, Google maps sends me a block down ... read more

Today we have hired a car and are driving round the island. I have checked out the itinerary of the many island circle tours on offer and plotted a similar route. Our route is 105 miles, but as I will be navigating (without the benefit of wifi), the actual distance could be anything really. We collect the car at 8 am and set off for our first destination- Halona Blowhole. The car was cheaper than anticipated but the insurance comes with a $1000 excess. We stop to watch the crashing waves force a fountain of water through the blowhole at about the same time as everyone else doing an island tour this morning, then return to our car. W have to wait for 6 coaches to reverse perilously close to our $1000 excess before finally managing ... read more

Today we’re going to Hanauma Bay – basically a drowned crater full of coral reef and exotic fish. It’s not easy (or cheap – at $25 a head) to obtain tickets; there’s a strict quota with tickets going on sale at 7 am each morning and selling out in minutes. We have managed to score some tickets for this morning. To reduce pollution, they have withdrawn the bus route which used to service the reserve, so the only access is by private vehicle. Only in America would the banning of public transport be considered a pollution preventing measure. So, after breakfast (there’s some leftover bagel which I tear up and leave on the balcony for the birds) we book an Uber and ride the 12 miles up the coast to Hanauma. We spend the morning swimming ... read more
