Hitchhiking is the best way to get around Kauai. The bus is only $1.50 but it doesnt run on sundays or holidays. and the bus only runs to 730pm. and the buses dont go everywhere. people really do pick up hitchhikers on kauai. noone should drive in a car without at least one passenger to lighten the carbon footprint. it is pleasant. i like being able to have a 15 minute personal conversation with a stranger. you get all of their attention so you get to learn alot about a perfect stranger. the first question is always, 'how long have you been on the island?' so far only one person has told me that they were born here. everybody else has a story about how they came to be on the island. it is interesting to ... read more

A week has gone by since we landed and Michelle has headed home. We had every intention of posting daily - but by the time we got back to our room we fell asleep exhausted. Here are a few highlights of our days. Our first day was one of my favorite days. We headed to Huna beach - one of the top 10 beaches in the world. We swam and after being sufficiently roasted headed up to the North end of the Island and hiked down a beautiful valley. I will add the names later. We ended the day with dinner at Bongo Bob's which had a live band and overlooked Alli drive. ... read more

Aloha Hawaii JULY 2008 OK. I will admit it. Hawaii wasn’t really the top of my "Must visit" list. But it is now. Just off the land of Supersize me, (the country that brought us jumbo fries and Uncle Sam) Hawaii is a pretty piece of paradise, sitting daintily in the middle of the great Pacific Ocean. This is Hawai’i and it is divine. I kid you not, the temperature in July is a perfect 28o with gentle breezes. It is not hot and never cold. If I had to choose my year round temperature, this is it. It rains lightly every now and again, but you would need to run around to get wet. The tourist brochures promise tans, trees, and picture perfect beaches. In my brochure, I would put pics of the giant snow ... read more

Hawaii? FIne thanks. The 6 hour flight from LA to Honolulu arrived just before midday. As we approached to land, we were surprised at how big Oahu was and how many high rise buildings there were. At the airport, we boarded the bus to Waikiki, where we had booked a hostel just one block from Waikiki beach. After checking in, we went for something to eat before getting our first taste of Hawaii's beach bathing. Waikiki beach is very busy with a line of high rise hotels all the way along it. It turns out that the beach is actually artificial and the whole area was a swamp before it was developed for tourism and loads of sand was shipped in. The sea, however, was warm and it was hot and sunny (in October) so we ... read more

After visiting the Hawaiian Islands in 1997, I realized a deep connection with the culture and it’s people along with the landscapes and the surrounding ocean. My ex-girlfriends parents sponsored my trip in 1997, so I stayed at the finest resorts and dined at many of the most reputable restaurants on the islands. Next, I traveled to Oahu in 2000 to attend the wedding of good friend of mine. I returned to Oahu in 2004 to take advantage of the surfing that I had ignored on all my other trips. In 2006, I traveled to the Big Island (Hawaii) where I proposed to my wife. We also spent a few days in Oahu. This article may merge these general experiences into one big blur for the sake of simplicity. Maui In 1997, I traveled to Hawaii ... read more

We arrived into Honolulu after a very long 20 hour plane journey and Ev was "welcomed to America" and proclaimed to be a US Resident. Happy that we made it in before the 30 strong queue of Philipinos behind us we made our way into Honolulu via the cheap hotel bus. We checked into our slightly worn hotel 2 blocks from Waikiki Beach. We knew already that we were in paradise! Sadly they don't let you check into your hotel room in paradise until 3pm no matter how much jetlag you are suffering from or how much you beg. So we checked out the beach and caught a few zz's on the hotel couch. We finally got into our room and discovered we were the proud new owners of our most comfortable bed in 6 months. ... read more
