We started our early morning with a much-anticipated family fun breakfast trip to Slappy Cakes where you can make your own pancakes on the grill at your table! This place made the kids very happy in the morning, which was needed after a rough night of sleep for everyone plus now that Steve has a cold that Tory and Rosie have had already. At the pancake restaurant, you can pick a regular or chocolate batter and whatever toppings your heart desires. In this case, the kids obviously wanted sprinkles, chocolate chips, pineapple, and butterscotch chips, in addition to the specially made coconut syrup at the table. It was certainly an entertaining breakfast for the kids so we bought "Slappy Cakes Maui" t-shirts for Steve and Nathan. We were able to pick up some supplies from the ... read more

We finally got some late morning, if 5:30 is considered sleeping in, and got down to the beach at around 7 for the 3rd straight day. Nathan enjoyed digging as usual, and getting to see the outrigger canoes being pushed into the ocean. Rosie shrieked with joy while standing ankle high in th ocean, as the waves came up the shore Steve held her balanced as she was pulled around by the tide. Tory and Sue took Nathan to make a puka shell necklace, blue as per Nathan’s important request. Getting to Maui was good fun. At Kona (on the Big Island) we took back our rental car, argued for being charged for insurance that we never needed, got refunded and arrived at the “commuter terminal” – this was a portacabin. We ended up on a tiny propeller plane with 6 other people, 2 of which were the pilots. It was a lovely sunny day, however the wind was howling – the plane was shaking even before they started the propeller! Anyway we made it to Maui (flight wasn’t actually that bad) and headed straight to our last minute hostel booking. The (slightly crazy) lady that checked us into the hostel definitely had the Aloha Spirit that was missing from the Big Island.
